FINALS IN PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS

(100 Points @ 90 mins)

1. Among 14 new electric razors which are packaged for shipment, there are 6 in w/c the operating
instructions brochure is not included. If 2 of these package razors are randomly selected for
inspection, what are the probabilities that: (15 points)
a.) Neither packaged razor contains the operating instructions brochure.
b.) 1 package razor contains the operating instructions brochure.
c.) Both package razor contains the operating instructions brochure.
2. To pass a quality control inspection 2 microwave ovens are chosen from each lot of 10
microwave ovens, and the lot is passed only if neither microwave oven has any defects;
otherwise, each of the microwave oven in the lot is checked. If the selection of microwave ovens
is random, find the probability that a lot will (15 points)
a.) Pass inspection when 1 of the 10 microwave ovens is defective.
b.) Fail the inspection when 3 of the 10 microwave ovens are defective.
c.) Fail the inspection when 6 of the 10 microwave ovens are defective.
3. An airline claims that 95 percent of its flights arrive on time. Find the probabilities that among
10 randomly selected flights (15 points)
a.) At least 8 are on time.
b.) From 7 to 9 are on time.
c.) At most 9 are on time.
4. Find the mean and standard deviation of the number of points rolled with a balanced die. (5
points)
5. The following table gives the probabilities that zero, one, two, three, four, five and six oceangoing
oil tankers will be unloaded in a port per day. ( 10 points)

selecting a new treasurer, or interview from 7 to 10 candidates for the position, are 0.65 and 0.20.
Find the probabilities that the president will interview ( 15 points)
a.) At least 7 candidates.
b.) At most 10 candidates.
c.) More than 10 candidates.
7. Given the mutually exclusive events A and B for which P(A) = 0.37 and P(B) = 0.41 , find ( 12 points)

f.) P(A’ᴖB’)
8. The two finalist in a golf tournament play 18 holes, with the winner getting $20,000 and the
runner up getting $12,000. What are the two player mathematical expectations if ( 10 points)
a.) They are evenly matched?

b.) Their probabilities of winning are ¾ and ¼.

9. In the game of “chuck-a-luck” three dice are thrown and a player bets on the occurrence of a
number which he can choose. He wins $ 1 if his number appears on only one die, $ 2 if his number
appears in two dice, $3 if his number appears in all three dice and he loses $ 1 if his number
appears in none of the dice ( 10 points )
a.) Find the probabilities of his winning $1, $2 and $3 and the probabilities of his losing $1.

4. The Machias Company produces 5,000 electric can openers per week. Their production
process is capable of producing 92 percent acceptable units with remaining 8 percent
having electrical defect. Because of warranty cost, they would like to catch most of the
defects and repair them before shipping. Their goal is to ship the product with at most 2
percent defective, they can do this by employing either experienced inspectors at a
weekly cost of $360 per inspectors. An Experienced inspector can catch 60 defects per
week while an inexperienced inspector can find only 50 defects per week. The company
feels that it can hire at most 3 experienced inspectors while there is no limit to the
availability of inexperienced people. Determine how many inspectors of each type should
be hired to minimized cost.
