II. Author: An unknown Anglo-Saxon


poet
The poet is assumed to have written Beowulf between the 8th century
And early 11th century. The poet is a part of a cultural group that still
exists in the DNA of the people who live in the country of Britain.

The reason he wrote Beowulf was from the recent events happening in
the king’s rule.

III. Character & setting:


1. Beowulf – A prince of Geats, who is strong and
courageous and stands by his words. Reluctant to back
down from a fight and is willing to risk his life for his
ideals.

2. Hrothgar – The King of Danes, has a big amount of


compassion for warriors and his people. And is not afraid
to hide emotions. Hrothgar is a wise and admirable king
to his people but lacks strength because of old age.

3. Unferth – A courtier( advisor of the king or queen )


Feels inferior to Beowulf and doubts the power that
Beowulf holds. Later on after the defeat of Grendel.
Unferth presents Beowulf with a sword for reconciliation.
IV. Plot:
The plot of Beowulf is that:
A half man and monster named Grendel enters the hall
named Hereot and kills thirty warriors in their sleep.
Beowulf a prince of Geats and the true definition of a
“hero”, Arrives at the land of King Hrothgar with the help of
14 other Geat warrior. And offered to fight Grendel and
succeeds on doing so.

After the fight, Grendel’s Mother enraged by the death of


her son comes to the hall and takes his son’s claw then take
King Hrothgar’s chief advisor Aeschere. Then proceeds to
brutally kill Aeschere. Beowulf arrives and slays
Grendel’s Mother with a sword from her home.

After 50 years have passed, Beowulf now old and lost his
strength is prideful about the battles he has won against and
now he has to fight a dragon with his followers. At the sight
of the dragon’s attack, all of his followers have fled and all
that stayed was one warrior named Wiglaf who assists in
the death of the dragon. Then fulfills the wishes of the dying
King Beowulf.

V. Moral of the story:


It’s that living a life of being respectable, good, brave and
honorable will leave you with a better reward in the long run
of your life.
