So, you think you want to become a Trainee Train Driver?

It’s true, this is a great role, working for an amazing company (that’s us), with

...but we don't take just anyone....our selection assessments are rigorous.

After all, being a Train Driver is a huge responsibility....and here at Arriva Rail
London, we only want the very best Drivers in charge of our Customers…

Here’s a bit about the gig – the stuff you should read carefully before making
up your mind to apply…..

Firstly, the basics:

Locations New Cross Gate or Willesden

(you shouldn’t apply for both, it wont be an advantage – only


your nearest location please)

Working Pattern Full Time, shift work

Salary (the good bit)


£29,804 during training, rising to £48,842 after completion of
training and circa £62,587 once first year of driving has been
completed.

Now, about the role – the really important stuff:

Train drivers are required to drive large volumes of passengers safely and efficiently.
This level of demand carries with it an extremely high level of responsibility in
terms of passenger safety.

Following an intensive training programme, inclusive of regular progress


assessments, you will become technically and occupationally competent to drive
trains in a safe and punctual manner, dependent on successfully passing the
required criteria.

About you:

To succeed (pay attention here please) applicants will require excellent


concentration and communication skills, good attention to detail and the ability to
work alone for long periods of time, whilst maintaining focus and awareness.

During selection, which is a 4 stage process, you will undergo a variety of


rigorous assessments based on the following competency areas: Attention,
Vigilance, Memory, Reasoning, Perception, Reaction time, Hand co-ordination and
you are required to pass all assessments.

What's more you need to pass all the following checks in order to be successful in
obtaining the role:

⚫Undergo a train driver medical including ECG


⚫Drugs and Alcohol testing
⚫Criminal record check
⚫Employment reference verification
⚫Immigration checks
Still interested ? ....you'll also need a proactive, ‘can do’ attitude, and excellent
decision making skills are essential. Key to the role is the ability to work as a team
player, communicating with the Control function and delivering excellent customer
service skills at all times.

Absolutely vital to the role is thinking on your feet and keeping calm under
pressure . One minute you could be dealing with a diversion due to a trespasser on
the track, an electrical fault on the train, an ill passenger, incidents on the line and
sadly, sometimes fatalities.....this isn't just about following your childhood dreams.…
