What is The Roof ???

The structure forming the upper

covering of a building.
A roof protects the building and its
contents from the effects of weather.

The Two Primary Purposes of Your

Roof
1) Insulation 2) Drainage
In most countries a roof protects
primarily against rain. Depending upon
the nature of the building, the roof may
also protect against heat, against
sunlight, against cold and against wind.

Roof Designs
• The roof greatly affects the overall appearance of a home.
• There are many standard styles from which to choose.
• Choose a style that complements the basic design of the house
being planned (Aesthetics of Building).
Types based on Designs:
• Flat • Dutch Hip • Geodesic
• Gambrel • Hip • A-Frame
• Mansard • Gable • Folded Plate
• Butterfly • Shed • Curved Panel
• Dome • Dome

Design Principles for Architectural Roof Feature

 1. Townscape
Design should generate a interesting skyline from view.
 2. Building Form & Architectural Merit
All architectural roof features are to integrate with overall building
form design.
 Building Performance
Facilitate for future use for sustainable functions e.g. rainwater
tanks, photovoltaic cells, green roofs etc.
 Good Neighbor Consideration
Suitable setbacks, screening, other means to ensure appropriate
level of privacy are maintained to adjoining properties.

Geodesic
Geodesic roof construction
consists of triangular framing
placed together to form a dome.
These structures have surprising
strength and visual interest.

Dome
Dome construction is one of the
most difficult to build but is often
the most interesting visually

What Are Green Roofs?

• A green roof is a roof of a building that is partially or

completely covered with vegetation and soil, or a growing
medium, planted over a waterproofing membrane.
• It may also include additional layers such as a root barrier
and drainage and irrigation systems. It is also known as
vegetated roof covers, eco-roofs or nature roofs.
• Water quality by filtering, absorbing or detaining rainfall.

Frame Roof Construction
• The roof framing is designed to support the roof covering materials.
• Framing must be strong and rigid.
• Roof framing consists of several distinct structural elements.
Different Elements of Frame Roofing:
Rafters
The rafter is a structural element of the roof that supports the
sheathing.
Cornice
The cornice is that part of the roof that overhangs the side walls.
Roof Sheathing
Roof sheathing supports the roofing material.

Employment
• Inspect problem roofs to determine the best way to repair them
• Measure roofs to calculate the quantities of materials needed
• Replace damaged or rotting joists or plywood
• Install vapor barriers or layers of insulation
Employment
• Install ventilation systems
• Install shingles, asphalt, metal, or other materials to make the
roof weatherproof
• Align roofing materials with edges of the roof
• Cut roofing materials to fit around walls or vents
• Cover exposed nail or screw heads with roofing cement or
caulk to prevent leakage
