Mechanism: combination of simple machines working together to perform a specific function
Simple machine: machine that requires the application of a single force to do work

Six Simple Machines
6 types of simple machines:
o Lever
o Pulley
o Wheel and axle
o Inclined plane
o Screw
o Wedge
Levers
Lever: rigid bar that is supported at 1 point
Fulcrum: point at which a lever is supported
Three Classes of Levers
3 categories of levers:
o 1st class: EFL
o 2nd class: ELF
o 3rd class: LEF
rd
3 class lever always produced mechanical advantage of less than 1 but is useful for distance and speed of output force
Ideal Mechanical Advantage of a Lever
𝐿𝑖𝑛
Ideal mechanical advantage of a lever is calculated by:𝐼𝑀𝐴 =
𝐿𝑜𝑢𝑡
𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑓 𝑖𝑛𝑝𝑢𝑡 𝑎𝑟𝑚
𝐼𝑑𝑒𝑎𝑙 𝑀𝑒𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝐴𝑑𝑣𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 =
𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑓 𝑜𝑢𝑡𝑝𝑢𝑡 𝑎𝑟𝑚
Ideal mechanical advantage of simple machines can be determined without measuring input and output forces
2+ simple machines that operate together form a mechanism
