Fenaroli’s Book I introduces the student to simple figured
basses. Even the simplest partimenti of this set require
prior knowledge of the three cadences and the Rule of the
Octave as detailed in Fenaroli’s Rules (see the separate
file).

The first partimenti of this set avoid any suspensions or


other dissonances. Later exercises introduce passing and
suspended sevenths. A beginner can realize these basses
with block chords in the right hand, or with a simple mel-
ody constructed from tones of the chords. With more expe-
rience one can add passing or neighboring tones or try to
incorporate melodic motives already present in the bass.
