After discussing about jokowi, in the next meeting the lecture explained about
functional grammar Functional Grammar by Hallidayan. Functional Grammar same with
Formal Grammar, the difference is from the word, such as in functional we will find
Processes but in Formal Grammar we do not find it but we will find Verb, these is the same
form. And the part of functional grammar is field of discourse; ideational meanings, tenor of
discourse; intrepersonal meaning, mode of discourse; textual meaning. But Mrs Ika just
explained about field of discourse only.
1. Participants :
- what/who are the major participants? Placed in subject, object, and
complement.
- what/who are the minor participants?
- what/who are the invisible participants? Who inform the issue but not
disclosed.
- Invisible participants no if passive voice, clear.
2. Processes in transitive :
- Material : the boys plays football.
- Mental : I am thinking about you.
- Relational : you’re good students.
- Verbal : he said that he will come on time.
- Behavioral : she smile a board smile.
- Existential : there’s something on your face.
- Her cheeks turned red as she felt ashamed.
- Please turn on the lamp. Turn on is material.
- Behavioral: between material and mental is like smile, cry, laugh.
- Existential: indicate by there.

4. Participant: what/who is talked about?
e. What/who are the major participants? The major participants is Jokowi as a
subject.
f. What/who are the minor participants? The minor participants are Muhamad
arsyad, arsyad’s parent, police.
g. What/who are the invisible participants?
h. How are the participants talked about, i.e. what adjective or noun collocate with
them?
- Arsyad’s detention.

5. Proccese: what verbs (collocating with the major participants) describe what kind of
procceses, i.e. material, mental, and relational process.

g. Mental: appreciate, forgive.
h. Relational: held no grudge, he had asked, arsyad’s parent, arsyad is suspected.
6. Circumtances: how specifically are circumtances indicated, e.g. by adverbs or
prepositional phrase
c. Adverb: allegedly, namely.
d. Prepositional phrase: in kramat jati, on Thursday, oct 23, in july, on Friday
afternoon.
Hmmmm!!! This meeting Mrs ika is not come again, but she gave us an assignment that is we
have to analyze Trio Macan blackmailers arrested into functional grammar and the result is:

a. Material used, identified, uploaded, exchange, confirmed, established,
acted,worked, crimes, arrested.

asked.

e. Relations : its controversial, this account, has already, had different, Hary was,
police have.
3. Circumstances :
a. adverb => allegedly, widely, currently
b. Prepositional phrase => on Monday, in late October, and extortion, in Tebet

4. Caustion : Roberto give the infrmation that Jakarta police was identified that the
