The mass of the earth is 81% the mass of the moon. The
distance between the
centres of the earth and the moon is 60 times the radius of
earth R = 6400 km.
Find the centre of mass of the earth–moon system.

A semicircular disc of radius R has density ρ which varies as ρ

= 3r2, where
r is the distance from the centre of the base. The centre of
mass will lie along the y-axis for reasons of symmetry. Locate
the centre of mass from O, the centre of the base.

The conical pendulum consists of a bob of mass m attached to

the end of
an inflexible light string tied to a fixed point O and swung
around so that it
describes a circle in a horizontal plane; while revolving the
string generates
a conical surface around the vertical axis ON, the height of the
cone being
ON = H, the projection of OP on the vertical axis (see Fig.).
Show that the
angular velocity of the bob is given by ω =√g/H, where g is the
acceleration
due to gravity.

A uniform bar of length 6a and mass 8m lies on a smooth

horizontal table.
Two point masses m and 2m moving in the same horizontal
plane with speed
2v and v, respectively, strike the bar and stick to the bar (see
Fig.). The bar is
set in rotation. Show that
(a) the angular momentum J = 6mva
(b) the angular velocity ω = v/5a
(c) the rotational energy E = 3mv2/5

A mass 25 gr is placed on a frictionless horizontal table and is

connected to fixed
points A and B by two springs of negligible mass and of equal
natural length
with spring constants k1= 100 N/m and k2 = 250 N/m, see Fig.
The mass is displaced along x-axis and released. Calculate the
period of oscillation.
