The Australian Curriculum places emphasis on Sustainability as a priority for study

that connects and relates relevant aspects of content across learning areas and subjects.

Throughout this seven-week Design and Technology students will explore the
concept of sustainability focussing specifically on waste. Students will be investigating the
different types of waste that we produce and what goes into landfill, they will then be looking
into the effects of landfill on our lives and the surrounding environment. Students will then
be looking at alternative solutions to how they can reduce their waste and be more
sustainable.

The supplies students will use for their creation will be used items from home already
along with items brought in by the teacher, ensuring that no students are having to spend
money or resources to gain the equipment required. This recycling of materials will be
beneficial for students as they will be seeing a part of being sustainable first hand.

The creation of their landfill representations will show them first hand what is
occurring in our world and the effect this has on life. Once students have gained all the
knowledge about this topic they will present the information to another class so the whole
school will learn about the topic of waste and landfill. The goal of this is to get the whole
school to be more sustainable and stop producing so much waste.

This topic ties into goal 11 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals as students will
be learning about creating a sustainable city and community, goal 13 as this topic is affecting
the climate, and goal 15 because landfill and waste has a detrimental impact on the life on
land.
