Introduction

Internal combustion engine is one of the major sources of waste heat through the exhaust gases and
coolant. In an IC engine only 30 to 39% of the total energy of burnt fuel is converted into useful
work and almost 55 to 60% of the energy is wasted. This waste heat is used to run an air
conditioning system of automobile using vapour absorption system. Conventionally, the automobile
air conditioner works on VCR cycle. This system is to be replaced by a system working on VAR
cycle which is reliable and uses heat as input. In this system the mechanical compression is replaced
by thermal compression using ammonia as a refrigerant which is environmental friendly. The main
purpose of this project is to explore the feasibility of using waste heat to design vapour absorption
system.

Problem Statement: Conventionally the automobiles use VCR system for air conditioning which
consumes high grade mechanical energy as input. Use of CFCs in Automobiles is creating
environmental issues. There is large potential in exhaust and coolant which is going out as waste.
VCRs are having high cost, noise and need more maintenance so their use is not extensive among
users.

Objective
1. Study the different types of working fluids and systems available and select the best suitable
system and suitable refrigerant for required working conditions. Design of individual components
like generator, absorber, condenser and evaporator for engine under experiment. Prepare a
thermodynamic model of the system and analyze the performance of the system. Fabrication of the
system as per the design and couple it with actual working and observe the performance of the
system.

Methodology
The methodology is to use waste heat from internal combustion engine to run air conditioning
system of a car. The system will be similar to the basic vapour absorption refrigeration cycle
containing main parts generator, condenser, evaporator, absorber and expansion device. The heat
input to the generator is provided by using heat of exhaust gases and coolant and then refrigerant
evaporate in evaporator coil which gives cooling effect. The condenser is air cooled and small
capacity pump is used to maintain circulation of the refrigerant in the system. The model is
developed for ammonia–water as working pair. The concept is to use this otherwise going waste
heat, for air–conditioning with the aid of Vapour Absorption System (VARS) which does not affect
the engine power.
