YEAR 2016 TRIAL EXAMINATION

LOWER SIX
MATHEMATICS T
954/1
Time : One hour and thirty minutes

Instructions to candidates:

Answer all questions in Section A and any one question in Section B.

All necessary working should be shown clearly.
Non-exact numerical answers may be given correct to three significant figures
or one decimal place in the case of angles in degrees, unless a different level
of accuracy is specified in the question.
Scientific calculators may be used. Programmable and graphic display calculators are prohibited.

SECTION A [45 Marks]

Answer all questions in this section.

1 a. Express √30 + 10√5 in the form (𝑥 + 𝑦√5) , where x and y are integers
to be determined. (5m)

b. Sketch on the same coordinate axes, the graphs of 𝑦 = 𝑥 + 2 and

1 1
𝑦 = |2 − 𝑥|. Hence , solve the inequality 𝑥 + 2 > |2 − 𝑥|. (5m)

2 1 2
a. Express in partial fractions. Find ∑𝑛𝑟=4 . (4m)
𝑟 2 −5𝑟+6 𝑟 2 −5𝑟+6

1
b. Expand (3 + 𝑥)−2 in ascending powers of , stating the first four terms
𝑥
only. Determine the values of 𝑥 for which the expansion is valid. (3m)

3 4 0 −2 15 −1 −4
Given 𝑨=( 0 4 2 ) and 𝑩 = (−1 15 4 ) , find the matrix
−2 2 4 −4 4 16

(𝑩 − 3𝑨) and show that 𝑨(𝑩 − 3𝑨) = 𝑘𝑰 , where 𝑘 is a real number to be

determined and 𝑰 is the identity matrix. Hence, find the inverse of 𝑨. (5m)

4 1 1
a. If z is a complex number and z = cosθ + isinθ , find 𝑧 + 𝑧 and 𝑧 − 𝑧 . By
using de Moivre’s theorem, express 2icos2θsin5θ in terms of z and show that
2cos2θsin5θ = sin7θ + sin3θ. (5m)

b. Obtain the equation of a curve f(x) with zeros (3 +2i) and −2 , and passing
through the point(−1, −20) . (4m)

.
5 A curve has parametric equations 𝑥 = 𝑡(𝑡 − 2) , 𝑦 = 3(𝑡 − 3) .
Find the Cartesian equation of the curve. Describe the curve. (5m)

Sketch the curve, label clearly also the x and y- intercepts. (2m)

6 Given the points 𝐴( 3, 6, −2) and 𝐵( 2, 1, 0) , find the vector equation of the
line which passes through the point (1, 0, 4) and parallel to line AB.
Find also the Cartesian equation of the line. (3m)

Given that AB is normal to the plane Π1 which passes through the point (3, 1,15).
Find the vector equation of plane Π1 . Then find the vector equation of plane Π2 ,
which is parallel to Π1 , equidistant from the origin , but on the opposite side of the
origin. Hence , find the perpendicular distance between these two planes. (4m)

SECTION B [15 Marks]

b. Find the centre, vertices, foci, and equations of asymptotes. (5m)

c. Sketch the curve. (3m)

d. Determine the values of m if the straight line 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 − 1 intersects the
curve at two different points. (4m)

8. Given that P(3, 2, −1), Q(2, 1, −5), R(7, −1, 3 ), and S are the vertices of
a parallelogram. Find

a. area of PQRS. (5m)

b. a unit vector which is perpendicular to the plane PQRS. (1m)
c. the position vector of the point of intersection of the diagonals of PQRS.
(2m)
d. in scalar product form, the equation of the plane on which PQRS lies.
Give also the Cartesian equation of the plane. (4m)
