Athletic trainers play a

critical part of schools’ team
From treating concussions to preparing athletes, they’re on the frontlines
BY CHRISTINE HANSEN
Special to The Daily Record

Spurred by an increased awareness

of the danger of concussions and other
sports injuries, private schools across
Maryland increasingly are working with
athletic trainers to prepare and protect
their student athletes.
A 2011 state law required the Mary-
land Department of Education to devel-
op policies for how public schools should
handle sports-related concussions. But
private and independent schools are in
the forefront of those who use athletic
trainers to work with students on and
off the field.
“What is certain is that where there
is contact in sport, or even life for that
matter, there will be concussion,” said
Megan Callahan, athletic director for St.
Timothy’s School, an all-female private
school in Stevenson. “What is most im-
portant at our level is continued educa-
tion for our athletic trainer community
to pass on to our support staff, coaches
and athletes.”

Robust arts programs set students up for success

Schools say these courses are vital to developing well-rounded graduates
BY GINA GALLUCCI-WHITE
Special to the Daily Record

Many private schools are facing some

of the same pressures as their public
school brethren to focus their curricula
on science, technology, engineering and
mathematics subjects.
But before students and their parents
go and trade their flute for a calculator
or their paintbrush for a chemistry set,
many educators know a robust arts pro-
gram is vital to students overall educa-
tional experience.
“What we find is that STEM students
tend to be black-and-white thinkers
rooted in math and science,” said Lisa
Collins, John Carroll School’s fine arts
department chair. “With technology now
enabling so much information at their
fingertips, we need to provide them with
the ability to think creatively and use that
information to innovate. Art provides the
perfect vehicle for this.”
Collins, who is a practicing architect,
said when students develop a new idea
it may be lost if they are not able to ef-
fectively communicate and illustrate
their concepts, which underscores the
importance of a STEAM-based learn-
ing approach (STEM with the arts add-
ed). “All pieces must come together to
create a successful whole,” she said.
The fundamentals of the arts — cre-
ativity, problem-solving, communica-
tion, empathy and teamwork — are the
qualities that “anyone who is looking
