SENSORY NATIVE GARDEN

Year 5 Design Brief

Attadale Primary School has been given a

grant from Project Robin Hood to design a
sensory native garden where the old Pre-
Primary grass is. In small groups you will be
assigned one of the five senses and oversee
the planning, designing and construction of
this new space.
Project specifications

What are you doing?
In groups of five, be assigned a sense
(sight, smell, sound, taste or touch) and be
tasked in researching how to incorporate
their sense into the new garden design.
Choose which local plants they will use,
what soils, how to water the garden, how
long the plants will take to grow, how
much it will cost, the benefits to the school
and community.
Generate designs
Use fact sheets provided for initial
research.
Plan for a 10m by 10m space of the
garden that engages assigned
sense.
Keep to a schedule of 6 weeks and
within a budget.
Work and plan around a universal
path through the entire garden.
Must choose native plants (at least
one species that attracts native
birds), appropriate soil, paving of
choice.

Over a few lessons your group will:

Brainstorm your dream 10m by 10m part of the garden and what it will contain.
Create an 'ideas' sheet for later reference. These ‘ideas’ sheet will be read out to the
whole class and each group will receive feedback each other (two stars and a wish)
as well as a project meeting with the
teacher.
Research native gardens, sensory gardens, native plants and bird attracting plants.
produce a requirements sheet
complete own garden design then a final group design (both birds eye and front
elevation).

Presentation
If all parts of the garden are on schedule
the full garden should be completed by
week 5 or 6 of term. This means the
school and community can watch it
develop and grow as the school term
continues. The year 5 class will host an
assembly officially opening the garden
and publish a section in the school news
letter about each section of the garden.
Delegate and work successfully with other
members and groups.
Produce a sound budget, schedule and resource
list.
Make appropriate choices of plants and soils.
Special sense feature – designed in art class.
Assist in planting and maintenance of garden.
These criteria must be completed according to
the lesson schedule.
Time
This Design Brief will be completed over a
four
week period. Each week two lessons will be
dedicated to the Sensory Native
Garden project. In weeks four and five all the
planning will be completed, enabling the
volunteers from Project Robin Hood and the
P & C to come in and begin construction.
