DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1.The tourism and hospitality industries strongly affect one another several associations and industry
leaders consider the combined industries of tourism and hospitality as one large industry-the tourism
and hospitality industry. The components of this large industry include:

- food and beverage services

- lodging services

- recreation services

- travel related (tourism) services

2. The components of the tourism and hospitality network may be independent and competitive
businesses; yet, they are interrelated and interdependent. The interdependence among the components
is strong especially in those countries which rely on tourism and hospitality for their economic
development. Although the components of the tourism and hospitality network are constantly changing
in connection labor, opportunity and growth, the network will continue to dominate as a global industry.

3. Tourism is the activities of people traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment
for leisure, business or other purposes for not more than one consecutive year.

4. Hospitality is about people welcoming other people into their homes or other places where they work
or spend their time. People who welcome visitors are called hosts. The people they welcome are called
guests.

5. Tourism recreation: A person travels to a foreign city, country, or state other than his/her own in
order to see, observe, enjoy, rest or recuperate there for a given amount of days.

Migration is moving to a decided destination in search of either employment, nourishment, trade,

religious obligations, or as a mode of transportation to a farther destination.. It may be an annual
occurrence, or a seasonal one.

6. The difference between a tourist and an excursionist is that a tourist is traveling for pleasure and an
excursionist is on a short trip or outing with a special purpose.

7. (a) Distance - What must be considered under distance is the difference between local travel or
travelling within a person’s home community and non-local travel or travelling away from home. It
excludes commuting to and from work and change in residence.

(b) Length of Stay at the Destination – The definition of tourist and excursionists as proposed by the
WTO is largely based on length of stay. Tourists are temporary visitors who make at least one overnight
stay, while excursionists are temporary visitors who do not stay overnight in the country that they visit.

(c) Residence of the Traveler – The residence or origin of the traveler is the third basic element of travel.
For business and research purposes, it is important to know where people lived.

(d) Purpose of Travel – The fourth basic element is the purpose of travel. It can be divided into seven:

- visiting friends and relatives

- conventions, seminars and meetings;

- business;

- outdoor recreation;

- entertainment;

- personal; and

- others.

8. (a) Environment at Destination - Tourism is in its best form when the destination boasts of conducive
climate. In contrast, any undesired changes in the environment such as high winds, flash floods,
drought, and extreme climate can affect tourism adversely.

(b) Economy of the Country - When a country is undergoing economic turbulence and when people are
facing unemployment issues, tourism is affected adversely. On the contrary, when a country’s economy
is doing well and people can afford to spend money on leisure, tourism progresses.

(c) Historical or Cultural Importance of Destination - The place or destination of travel affects the
tourism business to a great extent. If the destination is of great historical or cultural significance then
tourists will certainly like to visit the place for seeing monuments, castles, forts, ancient architecture,
sculptures, caves, antic paintings and utensils, clothes, weapons, ornaments, and other allied heritage.

(d) Research Importance of Destination - There are tourists who visit places with the objective of studies
and exploration. Need for research promotes tourism. Archeologists, Geologists, Oceanographers,
Biologists and Zoologists, Architects, and People researching Arts and Cultures seek places that have
great significance in the field of research.

(e) Religious Importance of Destination - The places of religious importance or worship are always
flooded with tourists. At these places, tourism is at its peak at particular time periods in a year. The
tourists often go on pilgrimage to find inner peace and invoke blessings of the deities they worship and
to cleanse their sins before death.

9. Site is a place of interest where tourists visit, typically for its inherent or an exhibited natural or
cultural value, historical significance, natural or built beauty, offering leisure and amusement while
event attractions include congresses, exhibitions, festivals such as the anti-festival and sports events
such as Olympics games.

10. Tourism and travel-related services includes services provided by hotels and restaurants (including
catering), travel agencies and tour operator services, tourist guide services and other related services.

11. The tourism industries differs from other industries because it deals with tourists who came
components- is one of several parts that makes up a whole system. We provide an empirical test and
formally compare the structural characteristics of the hospitality and tourism (HT) industry with other
industries.

12. Tourism industry is important for the benefits it brings and due to its role as a commercial activity
that creates demand and growth for many more industries. Tourism not only contributes towards more
economic activities but also generates more employment, revenues and play a significant role in
development. Hospitality provides essential services (i.e., lodging and food) for travelers, whether they
are on the move for reasons of necessity, leisure or luxury. Hospitality is a major factor in every vacation
and business trip, and is thus important to individual customers and to businesses.

135,156 in December last year. USA ranked 2nd by bringing 97,614 arrivals, 12.06% higher than the
December 2015 arrivals of 87,108. China ranked third with 45,336 arrivals, showing a double-digit

2. Boracay is a small island in the Philippines located approximately 315 kilometres (196 miles) south of
Manila and 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) off the northwest tip of Panay Island in Western Visayas region of the
Philippines. Boracay Island and its beaches have received awards from numerous travel publications and
agencies. The island comprises the barangays of Manoc-Manoc, Balabag, and Yapak in the municipality
of Malay, in Aklan Province. The island is administered by the Boracay Inter-agency Task Force. Apart
from its white sand beaches, Boracay is also famous for being one of the world's top destinations for
relaxation. As of 2013 it was emerging among the top destinations for tranquility and nightlife.

Boracay was awarded as the 2012 best island in the world from the international travel magazine Travel
+ Leisure. In 2014, the resort island was at the top of the Best Islands in the World list published by the
international magazine Condé Nast Traveler. In 2016, Boracay headed the magazine's list of Top 10
destinations to watch.

In April 2018 the Philippine Government decreed a 6-month closure of the island for tourists to
undertake major renovation works, especially of the sewage system, which had become obsolete and
insufficient. It re-opened in October 2018 with a set of new rules meant to address a variety of issues.

Geography of Boracay

Boracay Island is located off the northwest corner of Panay Island, and belongs to the Western Visayas
island-group, or Region VI, of the Philippines. The island is approximately seven kilometers long, dog-
bone shaped with the narrowest spot being less than one kilometer wide, and has a total land area of
10.32 square kilometers.

South-facing Cagban Beach is located across a small strait from the jetty port at Caticlan on Panay island,
and the Cagban jetty port serves as Boracay's main entry and exit point during most of the year. When
wind and sea conditions dictate, east-facing Tambisaan Beach serves as an alternative entry and exit
point. Boracay's two primary tourism beaches, White Beach and Bulabog Beach, are located on opposite
sides of the island's narrow central area. White Beach faces westward and Bulabog Beach faces
eastward. The island also has several other beaches.

White Beach, the main tourism beach, is about four kilometers long and is lined with resorts, hotels,
lodging houses, restaurants, and other tourism-related businesses. In the central portion, for about two
kilometers, there is a footpath known as the Beachfront Path separating the beach itself from the
establishments located along it. North and south of the Beachfront Path, beachfront establishments do
literally front along the beach itself. Several roads and paths connect the Beachfront Path with Boracay's
Main Road, a vehicular road which runs the length of the island. At the extreme northern end of White
Beach, a footpath runs around the headland there and connects White Beach with Diniwid Beach.

Bulabog Beach, across the island from White Beach, is the second most popular tourism beach on the
island and Boracay's main windsurfing and kiteboarding area.
Boracay is divided for land use and conservation purposes into 400 hectares of preserved forestland and
628.96 hectares of agricultural land.

Governance of Boracay

The whole of Boracay island is under the jurisdiction of the town of Malay of Aklan province. There are
three barangays in Boracay; Balabag, Manoc-Manoc, and Yapak.

Tourism

Partly because of its wind and weather patterns, tourism in Boracay is at its peak during the amihan
season (which starts in September or October and ends sometime in May or June). During amihan, the
prevailing wind blows from the east. Boracay's main tourism area, White Beach, is on the western side
of the island and is sheltered from the wind. During the Amihan season, the water off White Beach is
often glassy-smooth. On the eastern side of the island, hills on the northern and southern ends of the
island channel the Amihan season wind from the east onshore, onto Bulabog Beach in the central part of
the island's eastern side. This makes the reef-protected waters off that beach relatively safe and ideal
for scuba diving, windsurfing, and kiteboarding / kitesurfing.

In June 2011, it was reported that Megaworld Corporation, a real estate development group led by
Andrew Tan had earmarked PHP20 billion to develop tourism estates "featuring an integrated, master-
planned layout and world-class resort offerings and amenities" in Boracay and Cavite. The planned
Boracay project, Boracay Newcoast, involves four hotels with 1,500 rooms, a plaza and an
entertainment center.

Other resorts in Borocay include Discovery Shores, a luxury five-star resort managed by a Filipino
hospitality group called The Discovery Leisure Company Inc. and owned by Discovery World Corp. The
building, with 88 suites, a spa, and four restaurants and bars, stands at Station One on the White Beach,
and has been described as "more Miami chic than hidden oasis."

Leisure Activities

Leisure activities available on or near Boracay include horseback riding, scuba diving, diving helmet,
snorkeling, windsurfing, kiteboarding, cliff diving, parasailing.

Boracay is the site of an 18-hole par 72 golf course designed by Graham Marsh. In addition, as of 2010,
Boracay has in excess of 350 beach resorts offering more than 2,000 rooms ranging in quality from five-
star to budget accommodation. In addition, Boracay offers a wide range of restaurants, bars, pubs, and
nightclubs.

Willy's Beach Resort.

3. (a) Boracay draws 619,000 tourists in 1st quarter of 2019. The figure is slightly higher than the
number of visitors during the 1st quarter of 2018. A little over half of tourists are foreigners, mostly
from China and South Korea.

(b) Boracay Island is famous for its fine white sands and lush tropic scenery. Tourists from all over the
world have found solace in this tiny piece of paradise, making it a place people come back to again and
again.

(c) The Activities - Boracay offers a number of activities that people of all ages can enjoy. The athletic
will love playing sports. The not-so-active will enjoy the spas. Even kids will find something to do here.
