Activity 2: Think Pair and Share

Along Aguinaldo Highway are the houses of four Grade 10

students namely Jose, Emilio, Gabriella and Antonio. Their
teacher’s house is some blocks away from Gabriella’s house as
illustrated below

Things to Ponder

1. What is the distance between Emilio’s house and

Gabriella’s house?
2. What is the distance between their teacher’s house and
Gabriella’s house?

ABSTRACTION

1. Use line segments to connect the points representing the

houses of Emilio (E), their teacher (T), and Gabriella (G). What
kind of triangle is formed?
2. Give the coordinates of points E, T, and G.
3. Using the coordinates, how do you determine the horizontal
distance from E to G or G to E? How do you determine the
vertical distance from T to G or G to T?
4. Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the distance between
the teacher’s house and Emilio’s house.
5. What is the formula to find the distance between two points?

Mathematical Concept:

The Distance Formula is an equation that can be used to find

the distance between any pair of points on the coordinate plane.
The distance formula is
d = √(𝐱 𝟐 − 𝐱 𝟏 )𝟐 + (𝐲𝟐 − 𝐲𝟏 )𝟐 or PQ = √(𝐱 𝟐 − 𝐱 𝟏 )𝟐 + (𝐲𝟐 − 𝐲𝟏 )𝟐
if P (𝑥1 , 𝑦1 ) and Q (𝑥2 , 𝑦2 ) are points on a coordinate plane.

ANALYSIS The Philippines is known for more than 7,107 islands. Many tourists
love travelling by boat from island to island, or island hopping. Find
the shortest distance between the two given islands in the map
below.

Solution:

Let (𝑥1 , 𝑦1 ) = (−3, 1) and (𝑥2 , 𝑦2 ) = (2, −1). Substitute the

corresponding values of 𝑥1 , 𝑦1 , 𝑥2 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦2 in the distance formula,
then solve.

𝑑 = √(𝑥2 − 𝑥1 )2 + (𝑦2 − 𝑦1 )2

𝑑 = √(2 − (−3))2 + (−1 − 1)2

𝑑 = √(5)2 + (−2)2

𝑑 = √25 + 4

𝑑 = √29

The distance between the two islands is √29 units.

Analysis

1. What would be the coordinates of K?

2. What expression represents the horizontal distance
between E and G? the vertical distance between T and G?
3. What equation will you use to find the distance between E
and T?
4. How do you find the distance between any pair of points on
the coordinate plane?

APPLICATION The map below shows various landmarks in a town. Find the
distance between the given pairs of landmarks by using the
distance formula. Write the corresponding letters in the box to
answer the question.

Assessment Use the distance formula to solve the following.

1. What is the distance between the points M (3,-6) and P (-4,

1)?
2. Find the length of the line segment whose endpoints are (3,-
12) and (-2, 8).
3. Which will give the correct distance between R (1, 9) and J (9,
1)?

a. RJ = √(9 − 1)2 + (1 − 9)2

b. RJ = √(1 − 9)2 + (1 − 9)2

4. Nidora wants to go to a computer shop for her assignment.
There are two shops that are at coordinates A (4, 3) and B(-5,-2).
Her sister Tinidora suggested that she should go to computer
shop A because it is nearer their house which is at (-1, 2). Is
Tinidora correct? Justify your answer.

Assignment A. Follow Up
Solve the following problem.
1. Strike knows that the distance between two points is 2√5 units.
If one of the points has coordinates (3, 0) and the x-coordinate of
the second point is -1, what is the y-coordinate of the second
point? There are two possible answers.

B. Study: The Midpoint Formula

1. What is the Midpoint Formula?
2. How do you determine the coordinates of the midpoint of a line
segment?
