A study on the level of participation on different organizations and clubs

among STEM students and its implication on their academic performance in


San Lorenzo Ruiz Senior High School

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE PROBLEM

According to Wikipedia, high school club and organizations are


student-based school organization, consisting of administration-approved
organizations functioning with myriad tasks, varying on the specific purpose
of each respective club. Clubs composed of students, with adults as advising
figures to maintain the functionality of clubs also according to Wikipedia an
extracurricular activity, performed by students, that fall outside the realm of
the normal curriculum of school, college or university education.
Extracurricular activities are set of works that’s been widely used by many
schools around the globe nowadays, it is a specialized type of exercises that
is given for both of teachers and students. Extracurricular activities might
change in different specific subject it may be academically, through sport,
drama, debate teams, arts, volunteer works for community, student’s
journalism and especially through leadership things. This clubs tends to help
both the student and the teachers. For the students, it gives the student idea
for what he is great so hat he can develop it. It also helps students to shape
their future, why? Being an active participant on different extracurricular
activities gives a special recognition like scholarships from famous universities
throughout the Philippines. Activities involve inside the extracurricular helps
to improve the analytical and strategic mindset of the students. It also builds
the students confidence, independency, and trust for itself and its surrounding
environment. Different organization and clubs focus on different projects
which promotes sustainable activities fir the growth of the student’s
individuality. This helps the student to develop further but, these activities
weren’t enough for you to learn the things that you may use on your future
job, maybe some of them might help but not all of them. Students also need
to participate on school activities and attend them more frequently than those
clubs and organizations. Teacher might give incentives for the participation
but that alone wasn’t enough to pass the school. Upon being helpful to an
individual it might pose a different result on a student’s academic performance;
academic performance might lower if a number individual change their focus
from academic performance to an active engager of any clubs and them
harder time on tie management, extra expenses, more commitments, and
more schedules that is hard for many.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study copes to find out the participation level of a student on a club or
organization and its implication on their academic performance.

1. What are the different clubs and organizations in San Lorenzo Ruiz Senior
High School?

2. What are the different extracurricular activities conducted by the clubs and
organizations in San Lorenzo Ruiz Senior High School?
3. In what extent that the level of participation in club or organization affects
the academic performance of a student?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study is coping to help the following group of the society:

Teachers – It helps the teacher to give a more convenient activities for their
participating students. It will also help them to make better decisions for their
students.

Students - Give the students the idea on how they can balance their focus on
both academic and extracurricular activities without being left behind.

Future Researchers - For future researchers. In case they encounter the


similar idea, which may help for further study with regards to the researcher’s
topic.

Clubs and Organizations Facilitator – this study would be significant to the


facilitators for them to help the students out in what such actions should be
done with regards to the effects of their participation to their academic
performance.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
DEFENITION OF VARIABLES

1. School Organization – Refers to how school arrange the resources of events,


time, space, and personnel for maximum effect on students learning.

2. Clubs – A club is an association of two or more people united by a common


interest of goal. A service club, for example exist a voluntary or charitable
activity. There are clubs devoted to hobbies and sports, social activities, clubs,
and so form.

3. Academic Performance – Is the extent to which a student, teacher or


institution has achieved their short-term or long-term education goals, and
completion of education benchmarks such as secondary school diplomas and
bachelor’s degrees represent academic achievement.

4. Extracurricular – An extracurricular activity is an activity performed by


students that falls under then realm of the normal curriculum of school
education.

5. STEM Students – Refers to the students taking the academic track Science,
Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

6. School activities – Applies to a wide range of skill-based games, strategies,


and interactive activities that support student’s educational development.
7. Academic achievement – Refers to the level of schooling you have
successfully completed and the ability to attain success in studies.

8. YES – Organization –The only recognized co-curricular environmental club


or organization in the schools and consolidates all other environmental and/or
ecology clubs or organizations in school with the main and primary programs
or projects for the environment or ecology in the said organization.

9. SSG – The Supreme Student Government (SSG) is the foremost co-


curricular student organization authorized to operate and implement pertinent
programs, project and activities nationwide.

10. RCC – Ruizians Captains of Candor (RCC) is an organization in San Lorenzo


Ruiz Senior High School that promotes honesty and integrity through the
activities being implemented.

11. Math Society – A club in San Lorenzo Ruiz Senior High School made for
mathematically inclined people.

12. Science Club – Refers to a club that channelize the energies of students
and make use of skills and talents which satisfy students instincts and urges
and help in the student’s overall development.

13. Glee Club – A group organized to sing short choral works, especially part-
songs.
