AIRBUS INDUSTRIE ABD0002
Surface Roughness

1 General

1-1 Definition
The Roughness represents a measure of the microscopic status of a surface between two significant
points which are selected according to the Technological Structure of the item concerned (Metallic or
Composite).

The corresponding surface condition is determined by the Average Roughness (Ra) as measured
with a calibrated gage.

1-2 Objectives
- Unique Reference for Originators of Airbus Drawings.
- References for Manufacturing and Quality Organizations.

1-3 References
* ABD0004 - Definition Dossier
* ABD0046 - Units of Measurement
* ABD0076 - Composite parts - Surface status requirements
* ISO1302 - Technical Drawings - Method of indicating surface texture

1-4 Responsibilities
- Design Offices : indicate the Applicable Surface Roughness Values.
- Manufacturing Organizations : Apply the stipulated requirements.
- Quality Organizations: Ensure compliance with Design Office Requirements.

1-5 Purpose of the Document

Provide Instructions to ensure consistency between Originators of Airbus Drawings.

AIRBUS INDUSTRIE ABD0002
Surface Roughness

2 Requirements

2-1 General
Surface Roughness Values shall be specified prior to definition of the Protective Treatment which
may be applied later.
Generally, the Manufacturing Process of Metallic and Composite Items is different.
Surface Roughness Values shall be expressed in m

2-2 Targets Definition

According to results to be obtained, the Designer shall indicate the Selected Manufacturing Process
Specification and the Targeted Roughness Values.

Where applicable, Surface Roughness Values after Chemical/Electrical Surface Treatment,

Additional Machining Operation, Protection Coats shall be specified separately.

2-3 Cost Versus Function of the Item Concerned

To achieve a given Roughness Status, the Manufacturing Process Application Cost increases where
the Roughness Values decrease (Surfaces at an unjustified Low Roughness Value may generate
unnecessary additional costs).

Consequently, when specifying the Roughness Values, the Designer shall select the highest possible
Roughness Value for the Specified Functioning of the Item and take into consideration the final
Function/Purpose of the Item concerned.

2-4 Metallic Items

Metallic Items may result from one of the major following Manufacturing Process:
- Casting.
- Forging.
- Welding.
- Mechanical/Chemical Machining.

2-5 Composite Items

Composite Items may result from association of various basic Materials eg:
- Prepregnated Tissues (Carbon/Glass Fibres).
- Bi-Materials (Metallic and Carbon/Glass Fibres).

Surface Roughness

3 Indication on Drawings
3-1 General
All Airbus Drawings, whatever their origin (Members/Associated Partners/Subcontractors) shall refer
to ABD0002 for Surface Roughness requirements.

The Roughness Symbol to be used is shown at Figure "A".

The point of the serves to indicate the Targeted Roughness of a particular Surface.

3-2 Old Drawings

The Title Block of earlier Drawings may refer to the Members/Associated Partners/Subcontractors
Standard provided that the content of the Drawings comply with ABD0002 requirements.
Whenever the Drawing callout is in Inches the Unit Designation -µin- shall be added. Callouts
without unit designation shall be construed to be in -µm-.

3-3 New Drawings

Surface Roughness Values shall be indicated as follows:
- In the appropriate box of the Title Block of the Drawings (Ref: ABD0004 - Definition Dossier).
- On the affected Drawings at the appropriate level.

3-4 Roughness Value Indication for Metallic Items

Where the Item shall have the same Surface Roughness all over, the General Value shall be
indicated in the Symbol in the Drawing Title Block. See Figure "B".

Where the General Roughness Value does not systematically apply:

- the General Value shall be indicated in the Drawing Title Block,
- the Specific Values shall be indicated at the particular Surfaces concerned. See Figure "C".

Unless otherwise stated, on Transition Surfaces, such as oblique surfaces, the Surface Roughness
shall be considered as equal to the Roughest adjacent surface.

Where the Designer requires a particular Process (example, polishing, lapping), the method shall be
also indicated by the Surface Roughness Symbol. See Figure "D".

The method for indicating a Roughness Value for a Restricted area is shown at Figure "E".

3-5 Roughness Value Indication for Composite Items

For specific recommendations:
* ABD0076 - Composite parts - Surface status requirements

Where Surface Roughness indications and Measuring Methods (as required for Metallic Materials)
do not apply, the Surface Roughness shall be defined by:
- either a Statement indicated directly on the affected Drawing,
- or reference to another Standard or Manufacturing Process Specification stated directly on the
affected Drawing.

Where relevant the Measuring Method shall be indicated.
