Asssignment 3 Calculations

The calculations are done in 3 steps

1.) Finding the value the change in stress ∆𝜎 which causes 𝛾 = 0,05% at a depth of 1m from
ground surface.

Shear strain reduction curve and change in stress versus change in strain curve are expressed as

From both curves the change of ∆𝜎 versus 𝛾 is determined

Change in stress versus change in shear strain

Fig 1.1.

From the curve in figure 1.1. change in vertical stress at a depth of 1.0m from surface which results
in shear strain of 0,05% is

Δσv=185KN/m2
2) Boussinesq distribution of stress is used to calculate the pressure on the ground which causes a
change in vertical stress Δσ'v=185KN/m2

m= = =1.5
2𝑧 2∗1.0

𝐿 3.0
n= = =1.5
2𝑧 2∗1.0

For the above mentioned values of m and n we get I=0.216

∆𝜎𝑣 =4qI=4*0.216q=0.862q=185KN/m2

 q=215KN/m2

3. Next we proceed to determine the type of dynamic oscillation the system belongs to.

The equivalent dynamic system can be taken as a forced and damped oscillation with varying
frequency of excitation.

Gmax=240Mpa

𝜈 = 0.24

𝑚𝑓 = 22000𝑘𝑔

For 𝜈 = 0.24 ,Interpolation between and gives 1/0.25*0.24=0.96

𝑚𝑠 =0.9𝜌𝑟°3

From shear modulus reduction curve we get G=122Mpa for shear strain of 0.05%

K= = 122 ∗ 106 *1.69=1.08*109 N/m

Calculating F and P(pressure) for each type of vibrator we get the result in the following table.

The best frequency to operate on are the frequency on resonance which gives maximum amplitude
and force

173∗60
𝑓𝑟 = = 2337Hz….but it is more than the maximum. So the recommended frequency
2∗3.14∗√1−2∗0.52
is the maximum frequency for the machine.
