UNIT 8
Dear Parent / Carer,

Your child is about to start unit 8 of their Science coursebook Macmillan Natural and Social Science 2.
The topic of this unit is The city. In this unit, your child will learn to
 identify the main features of a city and the purpose they serve
 understand directions
 recognise public and private buildings
 make observations about different forms of transport used in their local environment and
classify them in different ways
 understand the importance of observing basic safety rules on the street
 recognise the importance of professions in cities and villages
Additionally in this unit, your child will investigate the quantity of traffic in the local environment. They will
say the City chants. These chants allow your child to review the key vocabulary of the unit in context.
Encourage your child to listen to the chant while looking at page 133 of the Picture dictionary.

The homework for this unit is to observe and chart numbers of vehicles seen in different locations.
Accompany your child to a safe place to observe passing traffic for 5 minutes. Help them to chart how
many of each vehicle passes in that time. Discuss the results and encourage them to note the most and
least common vehicles.
