Springfield Elementary Celebrates School’s Diverse Cultures and Abilities

Fort Mill, SC: Springfield Elementary School is excited to announce the founding of its first
World Culture and Diversity Club. As we welcome more and more new students and families
each year, Springfield Elementary can play an important role in bringing our many families
together to celebrate what makes each one of us unique and how diversity strengthens our
community. In fact, more than fifty languages are spoken among our students, making
Springfield a cultural treasure trove. An equally important part of Springfield’s diversity is our
many students with disabilities.

English as a Second Language teacher Meghan Love says that “Our student body is
exceptionally diverse and myself and other teachers all agreed that forming a club is important as
ever. It will allow students, teachers, and families to come together and brainstorm ideas on how
to celebrate our diversity as well as educate our community on how our students with disabilities
are just like any other of our students and have as much to contribute to our community as their
classmates do.” The possibilities are endless when we come together to celebrate each other’s
diverse cultures and abilities. With help from staff and parent volunteers, we can plan future
special events, student-led projects from art to music or a range of other creative outlets that
explore, celebrate, and educate on our diversity and the different abilities and talents of our
students.

Lead staff for the World Culture and Diversity Club include Jennifer Brailsford, Marcella
Capaldi, Meghan Love, Kimberly Long, Haleigh Strayer and Victoria Tuzzo. Membership is
open to all students, parent volunteers, and teachers/staff. The club plans to meet on the first and
third Tuesday of each month from 2:30-4:00pm in room D115. Students must have afternoon
transportation in order to attend.

For more information about the club or how to sign your student up, please contact Marcella
Capaldi at (803) 548-8150 or email at capaldim@fortmillschools.org.
