ROC

RETENTION OF OIL ON CUTTINGS – V1

(API 13 B2 – Annex B)

PROCEDURE AND EQUATIONS

NOTE: Use 50 ml retort

1. Weight the empty retort (A), gr

2. Fill with a representative sample of wet solids and weight, (B), gr

3. Run retort. Weight retort and dry cuttings, (C), gr

4. Record weight of empty graduated cylinder, (D), gr

5. Record Volume of Water recovered, (E), gr

6. Mass of wet solids, (MWet), gr: MWet = B - A

7. Mass of dry solids (MDry), gr: (MDry) = C – A

8. Mass of oil (MOil), gr: (MOil) = F – (D + E)

9. Finally, calculate Retention of oil on cuttings, ROC, gr of oil / kg of wet cuttings:

ROC = (MOil) / (MWet) * 1000, Or

Retention of oil on cuttings, ROC, % by weight – weight percent of oil on wet cuttings or mass of oil per
100 grams or wet cuttings:

ROC = (MOil) / (MWet) * 100 %

RECOMMENDATIONS

 Ensure sample evaluated is representative while drilling.
