CHAPTER I
Introduction
A. Background Of The Paper

Cooperative learning can be regarded as a philosophy and not just a classroom

technique. In all situation where people come together in groups, it suggest a way of dealing with
people which respects and highlights individual group member’s abilities and contributions. The
underlying premise of cooperative learning is based upon consensus building through
cooperation by group membersin contrast to competitionin which individuals out role other
members. Cooperative learning as a philosophy can be applied in the classroom, at committee
meetings, with community groups and generally as a way of living with and dealing with other
people.
This act of cooperation is something which is deeply embedded in our society, it seems
to be a fundamental aspect of our everyday lives. Right from brith until death, cooperation forms
the base of our lives. The society of man has survived because the cooprativeness of its members
made survival possible. People cooperative for external rewards; they cooperative in order to
form and further relationship and they cooperatein order to share the activities they are involved
in. If we view learning situation as part of the wider social context in which we live, then it is not
difficult to relate to this. Although our education system is less concerned and many a times
overlooks fostering cooperation in learning but informally learners do work together, cooperate
and share their their learning. Formalizing what happens informally is one of the purpose of
cooperative learning.
