Week 13 Pitch
Week 13 Pitch
Hi everyone I am Asa… (I am Dan and I am Connor), and together we are Haymaker. Initially,
the Haymaker team established that there were some limitations to the current ModBox system.
Primarily, it was not ideal for coaches to take large classes of participants as they were unable
to provide athletes with the required attention, monitoring and feedback. Therefore, our
proposition was to develop a highly safe system that allowed coaches to provide a large class
with a personalised routine which could cover multiple areas such as cardiac output, agility,
motivation and enjoyment. From this, feedback could then be registered remotely and analysed
between peers to improve performance and provide a more positive user experience.
Aesthetic choices:DAN
We wanted our system to align visually with existing gym equipment, and therefore our designs
would reflect a similar aesthetic. This was achieved through likened frame design, utilising
existing mechanisms, applying dark powder-coated finishes, and constructing with a solid steel
frame. The colour red was chosen as it is a primary colour of both the PCYC and Boxing.
Mobility was a key influence when designing this system, and therefore castor wheels and a
folding mechanism have been integrated to allow for easy transportability. Spring pull pins, like
that of standard gym machines have been used for simplicity.
To train agility and reaction, the mat has interactive games that focus on concentration and
quick reactions. For example, this mat is currently setup for a game of ‘quick reaction’.
‘Demonstrate mat leds’. Participants will follow these randomised LEDs around an area of mats
to step in the are closest to it, to activate the next led. This game of cat and mouse makes to
user concentrate and focus on the target. This can help at risk kids with focus issues to
concentrate on a fun and enjoyable competition with friends. The final function of the mat is to
allow users to analyse their footwork and movement during fights and training. The mat has a
multitude of sensors built in that can tell where the user is at any given time, and will create heat
maps and foot work data for user and coach to reflect upon after training.
Conclusion
Overall, the Follow the Leader and Agility Mat training system combine to provide the best
positive experience for both coaches and athletes. We would like to thank Allan Hahn, Paul
Perkins and the rest of the Modbox volunteers for giving us this great opportunity.

Follow the Leader allows coaches to input a boxing combination, which is then reproduced on
the athlete’s machine via LED’s.
- Adjustability
A simple and familiar mechanical spring loaded pin allows for height adjustability to suit users of
all age groups.
- Portability
A second mechanical spring loaded pin allows for the system to be folded down and stowed
away when not in use. The pads also act as a handle for easy transportation.
- Power bank
The whole system is powered by a standard USB cable which allows for flexibility in terms of
power management. A suggested option can be a standard power bank which allows the
system to be portable.
Provides a motivating atmosphere for participants through the increase of music volume in
correlation to the intensity of movements during sparring.
Utilises a system of LEDs to create opportunities for games specifically designed to train focus,
agility and reaction.
Modular system, designed to be moved around the gym, packed away, and taken to MODBOX
events.
Composed of standard EVA mat foam, with a VELOSTAT film layered between, creating a
weight sensitive mat. In between the foam layers is also where the LED and wiring is sealed, to
provide a durable product.
- Close up views
The mats can be interconnected to allow for adjustability to suit venues and activities of different
sizes. This view shows how this is achieved under the surface of the mat
- Heatmap
A heatmap of the participants movements is automatically generated from the data collected by
the sensors. This allows the coach to give feedback in terms of users footwork and positioning.
- Training games
The combination of LEDs and VELOSTAT provides a customizable game experience that
allows for various games such as ‘Avoid the Lava’ and ‘Reaction’.

- Data input
Users can customise their experience by using the app to choose what they would like to work
on during the session.
- Coaches/players talk and combine input for what they want to achieve - program is
developed
- How the equipment is positioned in the gym - group training and one on one
Due to its modular design, this system is flexible in the way it can be setup, with possibilities for
1 on 1 preprogrammed sessions, to large coach led sessions, and with the possibility for station
based exercise sessions.
- Feedback to participants
Realtime feedback for both products is delivered to the user via tactile feedback, visual
feedback through the LEDs and also sound. More in depth feedback can be seen in the app
afterwards, allowing coach and user to analyse their last performance.
