Applications of Microencapsulation?

Microencapsulation has wide applications

 Pharmaceutical Applications :
 To protect drugs from environmental hazards such as humidity, light, oxygen or heat. e.g
vitamin A and K have been shown to be protected from moisture and oxygen through
microencapsulation

 Taste masking of drugs e.g (taste masking of tinidazole and optimization of

microencapsulation method)
 To give environmental protection for stabilization of drugs sensitive to
atmospheric conditions
 To reduce gastric and other GI tract irritation e.g Microencapsulated KCl is used to
prevent gastrointestinal complications associated with potassium chloride.
 Production of sustained-release, controlled-release and targeted medications
 Particle size reduction for enhancing solubility of the poorly soluble drugs
 Sustained or controlled drug delivery
 Conversion of oils and other liquids to solids for ease of handling
 Delay of volatilization
 Separation of incompatible materials (other drugs or excipients such as buffers)
 Improvement of flow of powders
 Reduced dose dumping potential compared to large implantable devices
 Microencapsulation has also been used medically for the encapsulation of live cells and
vaccines. Biocompatibility can be improved by the encapsulation of artificial cells and bio
molecules such as pep-tides , proteins, and hormones which can prevent unwanted
immunological reactions that would lead to inactivation or rejection.

 For agricultural products

 Microencapsulation has also been used to decrease potential danger of handling
of toxic or noxious substances. The toxicity occurred due to handling of
fumigants, herbicides, insecticides and pesticides have been advantageously
decreased after microencapsulation

OTHER APPLICATIONS
Applications of microencapsulation in other industries are numerous.
 The best known micro encapsulated products are carbonless copying paper, photosensitive
paper, micro encapsulated fragrances, such as ‘‘scent-strips’’(also known as ‘‘snap-n-burst’’),
and microencapsulate daromas (‘‘scratch-n-sniff’’).
 A unique application of microencapsulation technology is for feeding organisms. Sea bass
larvae have been fed with all-protein microcapsules or with microcapsules containing lipids
to supplement their diet.
