WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY 2019

NARRATIVE REPORT

“Gurong Pilipino: Handa sa Makabagong Pagbabago”

If there is one celebration that is most-remembered by many, that is the World Teacher’s Day.
Last September 5, the World Teachers’ Month has kicked-off. The members of the Supreme Students’
Government (SSG) of Lodlod Integrated National High School (LINHS) celebrated this by giving away
black and white paper bags with a pad of sticky notes, ballpen, and a chocolate bar. Attached in the paper
bag is a customized message for each of the teachers. This brought a big smile in the teachers’ faces.
Most of them even took pictures of it and posted them on social media.

This appreciation towards teachers continued a week after when the SSG members left cute
boxes of necklaces and sweet pastillas on the tables of the teachers. LINHS teachers were happy about
the little surprise especially those who are also mothers. According to them, their kids liked wearing the
necklaces given to them.

However, it was not just the SSG officers who wanted to show their love towards our teachers.
The officers of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) also gave out rounded tubs of espasol last
September 19. The teachers loved to snack on in this tasty treat.

The month-long celebration of Teachers’ day made a big noise in the school last October 3 when
each of the sections, from Grade 7 to Grade 12, surprised their beloved advisers and subject teachers in
different ways. One of the most-used lines to ignite the surprise was “Ma’am, may nagsusuntukan po sa
room. Puntahan n’yo na po!” Most teachers would feel mad about it and would go straight away to the
classroom only to find out that nobody was actually fighting. They only wanted their adviser to go to the
room and be surprised by the classroom set-up that the students worked on. They also prepared a
program where they danced their teachers to touching songs and give them heartfelt messages which
made some of the teachers cry. Indeed, it was a memorable experience for both the teachers and
students.

Non-advisers were also surprised that day. One of whom is Ma’am Glenda Castillo, area
coordinator for English, who was surprised by her fellow English teachers. She was brought to the
Journalism office thinking that some Grade 12 students wanted to serenade the English teachers only to
find out that the serenade was actually for her. Extreme joy and gratefulness was evident on her face as
she accepted the chocolate bouquet prepared for her.

The practice teachers of Kolehiyo ng Lungsod ng Lipa (KLL) also joined the celebration by
treating the teachers with pancit which was shared by some teachers in the school library.

During lunch, teachers received, again, a Jollibee treat from the SSG officers. They happily
indulged on the famous chickenjoy while chitchatting with their fellow educators.

The day ended in a light note as the students of Grade 12-Genesis serenaded the teachers with
their own rendition of the song “Aking Pagmamahal”. They changed the lyrics to fit the celebration and
went from office to office to sing the song to all of the teachers. This touched the hearts of the teachers.
Ma’am Diana Camacho, officer-in-charge of LINHS, even blurted out “parang ang sarap maging teacher”
upon listening to the serenade.

The next day, October 4, all the public school teachers in the Division of Lipa gathered together
in Lipa Academy of Sports, Culture, and Arts (LASCA) at Brgy. Dagatan, Lipa City. Teachers filled the
venue as early as 6:30 AM to join the division-wide celebration of World Teachers’ Day. A lot of freebies
were given to the teachers. This includes umbrella and bags from City Savings, small pillows from Propan
TLC, and round fans from Chinabank. The event not only filled the teachers’ hearts but also their belly as
Mayor Erik Africa sponsored fishball, kikam, and dirty ice cream for them.

The celebration started at 8:00 AM with a mass lead by Fr. Jonathan Bartolome, parish priest of
St. Therese Child of Jesus. Fr. Bartolome greeted the teachers with joy. He also stressed out the
importance of the roles that teachers play in the society. “Kapag ang teacher ay nagbubukas ng
classroom, kasabay niyang isinasara ang pintuan ng kulungan,” he said. This rekindled the fire in the
teachers’ hearts and their passion to develop students not just mentally but also emotionally.

After the mass, Sir Alexander Simagala of G.B. Lontok Memorial School led the program for the
teachers. Greetings and sincere messages were given by some of the important people in the city of Lipa
including Ma’am Susan D.L. Oribiana, schools division superintendent, Mayor Erik Africa, city mayor of
Lipa, and Hon. Mark Aries Luancing, vice-mayor of Lipa.

The highlight of the event was the arrival of Senator Ralph Recto himself. Some teachers even
lost their composure and went crazy just to see and take pictures with the senator. There was a moment
of chaos when some teachers even step on their chairs just to take a peek at senator who was being
swarmed by a number of teachers who want to shake his hands and take a selfie with him. Afterwards,
the senator was given the stage to read out his “assignment” to the teachers.

In his speech, Sen. Recto extended his sympathies towards the teachers’ hardships they
encounter in the profession. One of which is the huge gap between the salary of a Teacher III and a
Master Teacher I. He, then, explained his proposal about creating Teacher IV, V, VI, and VII positions.
He also said that the current value of teachers’ chalk allowance is just equivalent to Php 16 a day. He
wants to solve this problem by raising the chalk allowance from Php 3,500 to Php 10,000. Another thing
that made the teachers jump with joy is his proposal to increase the salary of teachers. He wrote a bill
demanding a 10k salary increase across the board for teachers. This received a loud roar of clamor from
teachers who want nothing else but for this salary increase to happen. He finished his speech by donating
Php 200,000 for the teachers of Lipa.

The celebration continued as Next Band made the teachers sing out loud and dance shamelessly
to their songs. It was an all-out party for the public school teachers of Lipa. When they got tired of partying,
they dug in into the food sponsored by Counselor Oscar Gozos II. This was followed by a number of
games including inflated obstacle course where teachers won different prizes sponsored by Mayor Erik
Africa. In between the games are the raffle draw where many teachers from different schools won prizes
such as umbrellas, induction cookers, double gas burner, sacks of rice, and furniture. Two teachers from
LINHS won prizes – Ma’am Grace Robledo who got a rice cooker and Ma’am Camille Lique who won an
umbrella. The event was wrapped up with the distribution of goods in eco bags which came from Mayor
Africa.

October 5, 2019 was the last day of the World Teachers’ Month Celebration. Though it was
Saturday, the LINHS teachers went to school to celebrate the day with their fellow teachers. At 8:00 in
the morning, a mass was held in SIPCA 9’s classroom. Afterwards, the teachers enjoyed singing and
dancing along a videoke which was placed in the students’ entrance.

It was also the day when the Bet Kong Guro, a fund-raising contest, debuted. The representatives
from each area, namely, Ma’am Maura Julia Cassanova, Ma’am Camille Lique, Sir Kenneth Baet, Sir
Sajid Madrid, Sir Michael Sangalang, Sir Librado Paran, and Ma’am Angel Silva, revealed their precious
talents that are not always seen by the students and their fellow teachers. The teachers of each
department also performed different presentations which included song numbers, short skit, magic tricks,
and interpretative dance. In the end, Ma’am Cassanova of the English department won the contest who
gathered a total of Php7,967. When summed up, the contest collected a total amount of Php27,422 which
will be kept safe for the time being to be used in future events.
