OCTOBER 2019

Dear East Families,

I hope you've had a wonderful Fall Break. I wanted to share a few important points of pride for
our school since our last newsletter:

The girls cross country team won both the Hamilton County and State championships
this season. This is an incredible feat and we are proud of these student athletes!
East Football and Girls cross country teams also won both the boys and girls River Rocks
against West this season. Both Rocks are proudly displayed at NEMS!
We recognized 40 students as Miller STARS (Students That Are Reaching Success). Miller
STARS are nominated by faculty and staff each quarter for showing perseverance,
demonstrating hard work, overcoming obstacles, and achieving success in school.
Congratulations to these students!
Our students council toy drive was a great success, with nearly 200 toys donated to local
hospital children's oncology units. Our student council continues to positively represent
our community and our school!

NEMS will again provide "digital citizenship" lessons to all students this year. These lessons
will be delivered by classroom teachers and have been developed by a committee of
educators using https://www.commonsensemedia.org/ resources. Lesson topics include:

avoiding/appropriately dealing with digital con ict

identifying credible online information
using social media appropriately and safely
developing healthy digital media habits
protecting personal privacy online

Technology use among our student has become the norm, and NEMS believes it is important
to proactively teach our students how to be good "digital citizens." Doing so helps students
engage with and use technology more appropriately and productively, and most importantly,
stay safe online.
If you have any questions or would like to learn more about these lessons, please do not
hesitate to contact me.

Go East!

Principal
