CHRISTIAN

ETHICS 3

FINAL EXAM PAPER

Submitted by:

ARVIN JAY LEAL

I. IDENTIFY THE ARGUMENTS IN THE VIDEO

The following are the arguments and issue presented in the video:

1. “ ayaw takot mababa ang tingin, walang respeto sa mga miyembro

ng kinamumuhian ang LGBTQ+”

2. Religion puts a negative influence on the issue of sexuality re:

LGBTQ+

II. IDENTIFY THE FALLACIES OF THE ARGUMENTS

1. The first argument does not hold true as a generalization. The presenter
made an assumption that such is a general fact. The majority of Filipino
are well aware of the LGBTQ+ issue and just a handful who does not.
We now live in the world that most of us has an encounter with the
LGBTQ community, like in doing business, sports, education and other
human interaction. The is now the reason why most members of the
LGBTQ community are well accepted and respected in the community
as opposed to the generalization of the presenter.

2. On the Second argument that the presenter blames religion for such a
negative acceptance of the LGBTQ is largely a fallacy. Religion per se
does not imply that being a member of the LGBTQ+ community is a sin.
What our religion tells us is that the supreme being only created a male
and a female, which is backed by science through biology and the
understanding of reproduction, because I believe that a female needs a
male to reproduce. No other “kasarian” was made. The issue here now
is if there are male who prefers to be female and vice versa. This is not
the fault of religion as to how a person’s preference regarding their
feeling of being a man or a woman.
III. HOW WOULD YOU ASSESS THE VIDEO USING VIRTUE ETHICS AND
CHRISTIAN ETHICS?

In virtue ethics, what makes an action good or bad will be the character trait
of the agent. If the character trait of the agent is good, in which case the agent is
a virtuous agent, then the action is morally good; if it is not, the action is morally
wrong. The determinant now for the goodness or badness of an action of a member
LGBTQ+ in line with virtue ethics depends on his or her previous action. If the said
LGBTQ+ person habitually performs good action then he or she becomes
respected and accepted in the community. Now, here the thing, if he or she is a
habitual in doing bad or damaging things then he or she is considered to be a bad
influence. This is where the notion of being “ayaw takot mababa ang tingin, walang
respeto sa mga miyembro kinamumuhian ang LGBTQ+”, Because of those kind
of LGBTQ+ that gives negative meaning to the community and not religion.

In Christian ethics, the ultimate goal of each believer is to be at peace with

the creator and be with him through eternity. The things we do in this world
determines the chances of us achieving our goals. If we talk of the issue of
LGBTQ+, for me it doesn’t matter what your sexual preference are for as long as
you live your life the way you ought to live it in accordance with what is right and
what is good following the teachings of the Lord as inscribed in the Bible and the
teachings of the Church. The issues presented in the video is not the
representation of the general populace in the community but of only a few, the
video shows the bias of the presenter as to his belief, without really going in deeper
with regards to other aspects and issues. As a Catholic, I disagree with the video
as presented because of its many flaws.
