Simulation Model of Tsunami Impact On Tomini Gulf, Lesson Learned From Palu Gulf and Sunda Strait
ABSTRACT
We calculated the impact on Tomini Gulf of a large set of tsunamis resulting from earthquakes
generated by two potential source zones located at major fault zones of the Molucca Sea as
intermediate distance, and Balantak fault as short distance. Our approach merges updated
knowledge on the regional tectonic setting and scenario-like calculations of expected tsunami
impact. For each zone we determined a Maximum Credible Earthquake and described the geometry,
kinematics and size of its associated Typical Fault. We create tsunami model using TsunAWI
software. The tsunami simulation software TsunAWI is based on unstructured finite element
meshes, utilizing a linear Lagrange conforming and non-conforming finite element numerical
discretization method. The prelimilary results show a highly variable impact for tsunamis generated
by the different source zones when we using Easywave software. A large Molucca Sea earthquake
will produce a much higher tsunami wave (up to xx m) than those of the other two source zones (up
to x.x m)
Our work represents a pilot study for constructing a basin-wide tsunami scenario data base to be
used for tsunami hazard assessment and early warning.
