Introduction To Sustainable Construction Management
Introduction To Sustainable Construction Management
However, when society, economy and environment are viewed as separate, unrelated
parts of a community, the community's problems are also viewed as isolated issues.
Economic development councils try to create more jobs. Social needs are addressed
by health care services and housing authorities. Environmental agencies try to prevent
and correct pollution problems. This piecemeal approach can have a number of bad
side-effects:
A view of community that shows the links among its three parts: the economic part,
the social part and the environmental part.
As the following page shows, however, we can make an even better picture of a
sustainable community than the three partially connected circles shown above.
The concept of sustainable construction was evolved in mid 19th century but its
implementation started only in early 20th century. Generally a sustainable
construction is understood as being the one which is designed for present day needs
and meets all current requirements of the dwellers in a sustainable way, i.e. causing
least or no harmful impact on the environment. Considering the benefits of the
concept towards the environment, health, productivity, and costs etc, the developed
countries like America and other European countries are promoting the concept of
sustainable construction in a very aggressive way. Such a design/construction is also
known as the green building or construction designed for the future. The main aim of
the sustainable development is not only to build considering future requirements but
also to meet current housing needs and protect the environment and resources for
future. This is a tough task because with the rise in population and the ensuing
developmental activities, peoples are being more and more dependent over
surrounding environment and the resources for their day to day needs. As a
consequence, the environmental resources are getting depleted day by day, i.e. the
forests are getting narrowed, the ice peaks are getting small, sea level is rising, air is
getting polluted and the ecological chain is getting broken. Some species are getting
endangered and some have become history and are fixed in pictures and
documentaries only. This is not the only reason of going for the green buildings but
the ultimate aim is to satisfy each human being by providing a good shelter and
healthy environment and also to let others share the environment and keep the earth
protected.
This paper mainly addresses the issues regarding management of any construction
project alongside the concept of green technology or so called sustainable
development which could minimize the risks. That means the concept will be
effective in reducing the impact over environment due to the construction. People
have been discussing about the green buildings, green constructions and the green
technology with little care being given to construction management. In short it is all
about management of construction through new methods, techniques, tools,
instruments, procedures, workmanship and quality which goes a long way towards
achieving efficiency, reduction in cost, durability and other issues related to
sustainable construction.
