STRESSORS AND COPING MECHANISMS AMONG SH STUDENTS OF SPCIS

by Caezar Antonio, Kate Tica, Ann Parilla

As said by Loretta Laroche, “Stressed spelled backwards is desserts.” Over the years, scholars and
experts, even students, have been conducting studies and experimenting the most authentic stress
management, coping mechanisms, and stressors. But, as the years continued to pass, stress is still a
vital problem in our society especially in the fields of education. Stress, without a proper way of
coping up, have led a lot of students into failed grades and education, unhealthy relationships,
mental disorders, and even suicide. The following are lists of salient findings in terms of stressors
and coping mechanisms.
STRESSORS
Top 1. Periodical examination. This is the most contributing and principal stressor among the
students as indicated by a descriptive rating of extreme. But as debated by some psychologists, it is
not the examination itself that induces stress but the fact that the possibility of failing or passing the
exam can shape the course of one’s academic career and professional life.
Top 2. Transfer task. The lack of time and the weight of having many requirements to accomplish
from different subjects stresses the students. It is recommended that if possible, teachers consider
the making of interdisciplinary tasks to help lessen the burden on students.
Top 3. Monthly test. The new system wherein students have to take mandatory monthly tests is the
third most causative academic stressor. This foreign scheme that has just been practiced last school
year 2017-2018 has greatly affected the students of SPCIS.
COPING MECHANISMS
Top 1. Listening to music. In this era, music is one of the most prominent trends among the
millennials, ranging from pop songs, OPMs, k-pop, to other varieties and music genres. Music has
become a way of everyday life, after all, on most people.
Top 2. Watching TV, movies, and others. Have you been watching some TV series like Game of
Thrones? How about some good watch k-dramas like Doctor Stranger? Or movies of Harry Potter
series? It’s been noted that watching is the second most effective coping mechanism.
Top 3. Using social media. Awareness from national to global trends has risen ever since the social
media emerged and became a part of living among students. The use of this platform has also
become the third most effective coping mechanism among the students. It is expected already as we
are living in a modern world of innovation and lifestyle.
