CHAPTER II

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents information on the research methodology and sampling procedure
which were utilized by the researchers. The research design employed, the sampling procedure,
data gathering techniques, and the data analysis were also discussed in this chapter.

Research Design

This study is conducted to determine the different writing difficulties of the tertiary
education students in BASC. The students are picked randomly from different sections. 10
students from BSED- Physical Science, 10 from BSED- English, 10 from BEED- A, and another
10 from BEED- B. The researchers follow a method research approach, using the descriptive
research design. Descriptive research design is typically concerned with describing problem and
its solution. It is more specific and purposive study. According to Burns and Grove (2003),
descriptive research “is designed to provide a picture of a situation as it naturally happens”. A
questionnaire is administered to the tertiary education students from the Institute of Education
Arts and Sciences of BASC. Questionnaires are used to obtain data from individuals about
themselves and for their difficulties. Questionnaires are tool for collecting and analyzing
information from selected individuals. For these reasons, the researchers chose a descriptive
research design and adopted a questionnaire to assess the students’ writing difficulties.

Data Gathering Technique

The researchers use survey questionnaire as an instrument for collecting information

from the students; it was addressed to the section BSED-Physical Science, BSED-English,
BEED-A and BEED-B of Institute of Education Arts and Sciences for the school year 2017-
2018. Questionnaires are distributed randomly to the 40 students from the IEAS, 10 students
from BSED-Physical Science, 10 from BSED-English, 10 from BEED-A, and another 10 from
BEED-B.
