Improved Kitchen Trash Container

1. In-use purpose

1.1 Primary intended use

 Opening and closing with a foot pedal.


 Stable container that does not move when pedal is operated
 Tightly closing

1.2 Unintended use

 None anticipated

1.3 Special Feature

 Impact resistant
 Provision for a deodorant pad

2. Functional Requirements

2.1 Performance Requirements

2.1.1 Functional

 A stable container that is not easily tipped over


 Must open and close properly for a maximum of 20,000 cycles (20 years)
 Will not require maintenance over its lifetime.
 Tight-fitting lid

2.1.2 Complementary

 Useful life should exceed 7 years

2.2 Environmental Conditions

 No toxic material used

2.3 Economic Issues

 The cost of manufacturing should be no more than $ 5.00

2.4 Physical Attributes

 Same size and weight as regular kitchen trash container


 Fits a standard kitchen trash bag

2.5 Process Technologies

 Will be produced in company’s existing plant using existing plastic


moulding equipment.
 The cost of tooling will be $450,000.

 The design should be designed and prototype tested by the end of July
2007.
 Design and development cost, including engineering, model shop, and
laboratory should not exceed $100,000.
