Main Project Abstract

Energy prices and environmental concerns have put electric vehicles in focus of public
interest. Light electric vehicles have started to use peoples everyday lives to reduce air pollution,
noise, and congestion in the city center. Polymer electrolyte membrane(PEM) fuel cells generate
electricity electrochemically with minimal thermal losses and have very high efficiencies. Due to
such high efficiencies PEM fuel cells have a significant potential for many applications such as
transportation, residential, telecommunication back-up, portable devices, space and military
applications.

S7 – EEE – Main Project - July to December 2019

With this project we plan to implement a hybrid model with fuel cell and battery. The
fuel cell requires hydrogen as its input. A DC-DC converter is needed since the output from the
fuel cell is variable DC. The main energy storage System is the battery. The two modes in the
bicycle includes pedaling and cruise mode. Whenever the charge in the battery drains up to a
particular level the fuel cells will charge the battery again. The main advantage of using this
hybrid system is the ‘range extension’. Another main feature includes the reduction in charging
time of the system. A normal electric bicycle takes about 3.5 hours to get fully charged, with the
above proposed system the charging time can be reduced since hydrogen requires less time for
refilling.

With this idea we believe that this technology can be implemented in the automotive
industry in the near future for the production of electric vehicles with improved efficiency.
Expected Outcome:

1. Design of hybrid model of Electric Vehicle using Fuel Cell and Battery.

2. Extend the range of Electric Vehicle .
