OF DINGRAS NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL-SULQUIANO CAMPUS USING
CONVERSION ROULETTE”

CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM

Introduction

“Without mathematics, there’s nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics.
Everything around you is numbers.”-Shakuntala Devi

Mathematics is not only a subject, it is also a part of our lives, particularly on conversion.
As technical teachers, we always encounter this when we convert unit of measurements in doing
activities in preparing foods.

According to CTI Reviews, conversion of units refers to conversion factors between


different measurement for the same quantity. The process of making a conversion cannot
produce a more precise than the original quoted figure. Appropriate rounding of results is
performed after conversion. Some students find the conversion of units difficult, whereas for
others it seems to come naturally. Converting between units of measurement for a certain recipe
needed in food preparation is an important skill because this can actually help them to cook and
bake according to the cooking and baking standards of a certain food (Ezine Articles).

If we try to look for other fields and disciplines, converting units of measurement is
widely used in Food Technology, Food and Service Management and even Food Industries
because it really helps us to prepare and produce good quality products.

As an observation with the Grade 11- Senior High School students of Dingras National
High School-Sulquiano Campus, it came to a realization that they have a difficulty in dealing
with converting unit of measurements of ingredients when they are having their hands-on
activities. Since, converting unit of measurements is necessary for students to master, the
researcher proposed the Conversion Roulette to address this problem. Through the use of this
educational intervention, it tries to help the Senior High School students to easily convert unit of
measurements of ingredients.

Statement of the Problem

This action research tries to find out the effectiveness of Conversion Roulette in
enhancing the skills of Senior High School students in converting measurements.

Specifically, it answers the following questions:

1. What is the student’s performance before the use of Conversion Roulette?

2. What is the student’s performance after the use of Conversion Roulette?

3. Is there a significant difference between the performance of the students before and
after the intervention of Conversion Roulette?

Significance of the Study

This Action Research is beneficial to the learners, teachers, school and also the
researchers. Through the implementation of the educational intervention for the problem to be
solved, it creates new ideas and concepts helpful in the development of all domains of learning.

Learners. The result of this study is expected to help the students in enhancing their conversion
skills.

Teachers. This research is also beneficial to the teachers for these gives the idea to have or
improve the same activities to enhance the performance of the students.
School. This research serves as an instrument to improve the students’ performances holistically,
and also help the teacher create new teaching materials and activities that are helpful in
promoting the school’s supremacy.

Researchers. The result of this study will be helpful for other researchers to conduct similar
research to improve students’ performances.

Scope and Delimitations of the Study

This research focused only in enhancing the conversion skills of the Grade 11 Senior
High School students using the said intervention, Conversion Roulette. This was conducted from
January 28, 2019 up to April 3, 2019 at Dingras National High School-Sulquiano Campus.

Operational Definition of Terms

For better understanding of the study, the following terms are defined as they are used in
the study.

Conversion Skill. It is the process of solving and converting measurement into its equivalence.

Conversion Roulette. A mock-up wheel that consists of different units of measurements into its
equivalent.

Senior High School Student. A person who attends Senior High School, who is taking up
Technology and Livelihood Education Bread and Pastry Production class.

Pre-test. It refers to the students’ performance evaluation score prior to the intervention.

Post-test. It refers to the students’ performance evaluation score after the intervention.
