DEFECTS
• HIGH SELF WEIGHT
• LOW TENSILE STRENGTH
• BLEEDING
 PERMEABILITY
 CRACKS
INTRODUCTION
 Concrete is porous
 The porosity is due to air-voids , water voids or due to
the inherent porosity of gel structure itself
 Reduces strength
 Reduction of porosity results in increase in strength of
concrete
 Vibration , pressure application ,none of these could
really help to reduce the water voids and the inherent
porosity of gel
 Over vibration leads to segregation, bleeding
POLYMER CONCRETE
Polymer concrete are a type of concrete that use
polymers to replace cement as a binder

In some cases the polymers are used in addition

to cement to form
POLYMER CEMENT CONCRETE

POLYMER MODIFIED CONCRETE
EXAMPLES OF POLYMER CONCRETE

 Polyester polymer concrete

 Epoxy polymer concrete
 Vinylester polymer concrete
 Urea formaldehyde polymer concrete

a polymer concrete can be made with many

kinds of polymer resins that allow the concrete to be
poured or troweled and then hardened.
TYPES OF POLYMER CONCRETE
 Polymer impregnated concrete
 Polymer cement concrete
 Polymer concrete
 Geopolymer concrete
POLYMER IMPREGNATED CONCRETE

 A polymer impregnated concrete is one of the widely

used polymer composite.
 Polymer impregnated concrete consists of polymers
which are used to impart certain special properties to
concrete
 It is prepared when the precast conventional concrete
cured and dried in oven or by dielectric heating from
which the air in the open cell is removed by vacuum.
 Then low viscosity monomer is diffused through open
cell and polymerised by using radiation , application
of heat or by chemical reaction.
Examples of PIC monomers are
 Vinyl type such as methyl methacrylate (MMA)

 Styrene , Acrylonitrile , vinyl acetate

POLYMER CEMENT CONCRETE
 It is mixture of cement , aggregates, water, polymer
 It is a modified cement concrete
 Polymer cement concrete can be cast-in-place in
field , whereas PIC is used in a precast structure
 Modification of concrete with a polymer results in
greatly improved properties , at a reasonable cost
 The properties of polymer cement concrete produced
by modifying concrete with various polymers range
from poor to quite favourable.
 Poor properties of certain products have been
attributed to the incompatibility of most organic
polymers and better properties are produced by using
prepolymers such as unsaturated polyester crosslinked
with styrene or epoxies
 Examples of PMC are poly butadiene styrene, epoxy
styrene ,furans
POLYMER CONCRETE

 Normal polymer concrete is a concrete in which the

binding material cement is replaced by polymer
 The performance of the polymer concrete depends upon
the polymer properties
 Polymer binding can be thermoplastic, but more frequently
a thermosetting polymer
GEOPOLYMER CONCRETE
 Geopolymer concrete is a type of concrete that is
made by reacting aluminate and silicate bearing
materials with waste materials such as flyash, rice-
husk, slag from iron production along with
aggregates
POLYMER IMPREGNATED CONCRETE(PIC) :
where the cement concrete is treated by soaking and
polymerization
POLYMER CONCRETE(PMC) :
where the polymer is mixed along with cement
POLYMER CONCRETE(PM) :
where the binder is a polymer that replaces the cement
paste
GEOPOLYMER CONCRETE(GPC) :
Where aluminate and silicate materials are used with
flyash,rice-husk,slag along with aggregates
PROPERTIES OF POLYMER CONCRETE

STRESS STRAIN RELATIONSHIP:

COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH
APPLICATIONS
 Marine works
 Road repair works
 Sewage works
 Desalination plants
 Prefabricated structure elements
 Water proofing of structures
 Irrigation works
ROAD REPAIR WORK
ADVANTAGES
 Low permeability
 Much faster curing
 Greater compressive strength
 High tensile strength
 Lighter weight (slightly less dense then traditional
concrete depending on the resin content of the mix)
 Good chemical resistance
 durability
 Good resistance against corrosion
DISADVANTAGES
 More expensive
 Some safety issues arise out of the use of polymer
concrete
 The monomers maybe toxic
 Some catalyst are harmful to human skin
