1. Introduction
Second Life, is an International Virtual World Community consisting of over 8
Million users, all collectively connecting with each other in a 3D ‘game-like’
environment. At any one time, there are 40,000-80,000 users logged in
simultaneously!

1.1.Why use Second Life

So why do people login to Second Life? Well, there are a number of reasons.
Firstly, connecting with people in 3D is very different than connecting with a person
using Skype, MSN, or any other Chat / video based method. In Second Life, the
entire 3D environment can be created and programmed by the users themselves.
This allows for complete customization of the surroundings, and amazing
possibilities for self-expression. Since users are represented as “Avatars” or 3D
Characters, body language and etiquette are brought into the equation when
communicating with other users. This in and of itself, adds an interesting
dimension to online collaboration. Lastly, SecondLife has a built in Currency
system which allows users to create 3D content and sell it within SecondLife’s
virtual economy to earn REAL dollars. As such, many entrepreneurs use Second
Life for real business.

1.2.How do I connect to Second Life?

To connect to this Virtual world, users need to download special programs called
“Viewers”. A viewer is much like an Internet Browsers, but instead of browsing a
2D webpage, a user logs in with an Avatar, and flies, or walks in a 3D Space! To
login to Second Life, a user first must go to the SecondLife.com webpage, and
create an account, along with an avatar. Once an account has been created, the
user can download Second Life’s browser, called Viewer 2.0, run it, and log in using
their Avatar’s name.

1.3. What is Avatar Meetup?

SecondLife, by nature, obscures a user’s real life identity. It does this by forcing the
user to select among a list of fictitious last names when creating a user Account.
For some, this can be a blessing, but for others, who are interested in socially
connecting with other real life users, or for those who want to do business under

their real name, or for educators and students, real life names are important.
Avatar Meetup therefore, steps up to the plate, and brings a real life dimension to
Second Life. Using Avatar Meetup, users can link their Avatars’ Identity, to their
Real Life Facebook Identity. Once installed, users can use Avatar Meetup to reveal
their Second Life Avatar names to their Facebook Friends who also have the Avatar
Meetup App.

1.4.Fund Raising

The Avatar Meetup application was built as a fund raising application for the
Schizophrenia Society of Alberta (SSA), Canada. SSA was interested in “thinking
outside the box” and connecting with a larger international community of users
interested in the fight against schizophrenia. The Avatar Meetup App was then
conceived to be a tool to benefit users socially, while at the same time raise funds
for the fight against schizophrenia.

On the Avatar Meetup App, users will find a “Donate Now” button which will direct
users to the Tax Deductible donation page for SSA.

2. Linking your Avatar

Linking an avatar to a user’s Facebook Profile couldn’t be easier. It requires first
that the user has a Facebook account, and second, that they purchase the Avatar
Meetup HUD (Heads up Display) from the Second Life Market Place. Once
purchased, and avatar must wear the HUD to complete the Linking step. Once
worn, the HUD will produce a popup dialog message in Second Life, and direct the
user to the Facebook Login page. Once logged in, the user must confirm their
Avatar Name. Once confirmed, the users Avatar will be linked to their Facebook
Profile.

2.1.1. Create an Avatar for Second Life

In order to use the Avatar Meetup App, you will need to create an account on
http://SecondLife.com. Once you have created your account, and confirmed your email
with SecondLife.com, you must download the Second Life Viewer 2 Shared Media Beta

2.1.2. Log into Second Life

Once downloaded and installed, log into Second Life using your Second Life Avatar Name.
If it’s your first time in Second Life, you may find yourself on orientation island. It’s a good
idea to go spend some time and walk through their orientation so that you become familiar
with Second Life’s user interface. Once you have finished the orientation, you can press
control-F or (cmd-f on a mac) to search for different destinations. The Schizophrenia
society Head Quarters can be found here: http://bit.ly/SCHIZOPHRENIA
