On-the-job Training (OJT) is one of the earliest forms of training-- observational

learning is probably the earliest. It is one-on-one training located at the job site, where
someone who knows how to do a task shows another how to perform it.
In antiquity, the work performed by most people did not rely on abstract
thinking or academic education. Parents or community members, who knew the skills
necessary for survival, passed their knowledge on to the children through direct
instruction. This method is still widely used today. It is a frequently used because it
requires only a person who knows how to do the task and the tools the person uses to
do the task. It may not be the most effective or the most efficient method at times, but it
is normally the easiest to arrange and manage. Because the training takes place on the
job, it can be highly realistic and no transfer of learning is required. It is often
inexpensive because no special equipment is needed other than what is normally used
on the job. One drawback is that OJT takes the trainer and materials out of production
for the duration of the training time. In addition, due to safety or other production factors,
it is prohibitive in some environment. Even many researchers show the importance of
the On the Job Training. For instance, in a research conducted by Arun Paul[1] confirms
the significance of providing social skills training to professional social workers.
A large majority of employee learning is accomplished through on-the-job

training. Well designed OJT training programs are well planned and resourced, staff
managers with competent coaching ability, and define the criterion for performance
standards.

SUMMARY
On-the-job training, also known as OJT, is teaching the skills, knowledge,

and competencies that are needed for employees to perform a specific job within
the workplace and work environment. Employees learn in an environment in
which they will need to practice the knowledge and skills taught in the on-the-job
training.
On-the-job training uses the regular or existing workplace tools, machines,

documents, equipment, knowledge, and skills necessary for an employee to
learn to effectively perform his or her job.
It occurs within the normal working environment that an employee

experiences on the job. It may occur as the employee performs actual work, or it
may occur elsewhere within the workplace using training rooms, training
workstations, or training equipment.
The simple objective of OJT is to use the existing environment, tools, and
skill training that are available in their workplace to train an employee to do their
job—on the job.

OBJECTIVES
The objectives of On- The- Job Training (OJT) is directly related to the teaching-
learning experience andshould help me to:
1. To remove the learner from the classroom environment to the workplace to

continue learning in a manner that will be able to be practically applied upon graduation.
2. To identify my ability to cope up in different things.
3. To cover a wide base of points. It targets those who have finished either high
school or the first years of college and are looking for employment.
4. To inspire the young people that work with the scheme to adopt their own
ways of coping with the working world.
5. To encourage self respect and a higher sense of self esteem to those who
have been pushed back from work opportunities continually in the past and have since
struggled to get back on their feet.
6. To do effort for quality in the field of software development with devotion,

focus, positive approach, cheerful attitude and enthusiasm.
