Cooking Class as Teaching Procedure Text

(A Development Research for the Ninth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 3 Sungai

Raya in Academic Year 2018/2019)

B. Research Background

In Indonesia, reading is one of subject taught in English at Junior High School.

Students to increase their knowledge and to success their vocabulary by reading.

Reading is an activity to get information from the authentic text. Reading is an

interaction that happens between the writer and the reader (Nuttal, 2005). According

to Breiseth, L (2014), the English reading ability for foreign students can benefit to

enjoy what the text or story is talking about, to explore many information in a text or

book. Therefore, the reading is necessary for students.

Based on the syllabus for the ninth grade students of junior high school, procedure

text is one of the material in the first semester. In procedure text, the ability that

students learn is mostly about reading. Comprehension in reading itself can be

defined as the act of constructing meaning from the text. The teachers commonly face

problem related with students’ comprehension of reading text, in teaching learning

through reading. The students sometimes difficult to comprehend the reading text,

because they did not have sufficient knowledge or only focus in the textbooks or

Lembar Kerja Siswa (LKS). The material also only about how to make instant
noodles or fried rice. Then, the teacher only asks the students to read the text and

answer the series of questions in it.

The general purposes of having a reading ability for students are to access the

literature, to make students enjoy reading in the foreign language, to read without

help unfamiliar authentic text (Nuttal, 2005). To practice cooking in the classroom is

good activity to make students enjoy in learning procedure text. Based on the

textbooks, there are some materials make students difficult to practice cooking in the

classroom. In making fried rice or instant noodles, the students have to bring the

kitchen equipments, such as pan, stove, spatula, etc. There are many materials that

can be implemented beside those that simpler for ninth grade students, such as how to

make rujak. Rujak is the one of the traditional food in Indonesia that simple to make

it.

Based on the explanation above, the researcher is interested to apply cooking class as

teaching procedure text. Cooking class has the instructions that students can read and

practice how to make it. Cooking class was chosen because students can practice

directly, fun, and fresh for their learning strategy in procedure text. Cooking class is

suitable for students because it easy to get the material in real life. Based on

preliminary in SMP Negeri 3 Sungai Raya by interviewing the teacher, the researcher

found out that the teacher never use cooking class as reading material in procedure

text. The teacher sometimes use the text from the textbooks however the reading
material already common for the students. Moreover, the students can apply cooking

class to practice cooking with their friend or make rujak by their own at home.

C. Research Problem

The problem of this research is restricted as follow:

1. Do the student need interest learning activity?

2. What are the experts’ perceptions on cooking class designed by the

researcher?

D. Research Purpose

From the formulation of the problem, the objectives of the study can be stated as

follows:

1. To find out whether the students need interest learning activity or not.

2. To know the experts’ perception on cooking class as teaching procedure text

designed by the researcher.


E. Scope of Research

1. Limitation

In conducting this research, the researcher will focus on cooking class as

teaching procedure text to ninth grade of SMP Negeri 3 Sungai Raya. The

researcher will focus on analysing, designing, and developing the cooking

class as teaching procedure text. The target of this research are teacher and

students.

2. Terminology

In ordering to clarify the terms and to avoid misunderstanding, the researcher

provides the explanation as follows:

(1) Reading is an activity to get information from the authentic text.

(2) Cooking is the activity to practice or preparing food by combining,

mixing, and heating the ingredients.

(3) Class is the room in a school that consist of students.

(4) Procedure text is a text which consist of some steps to make something

which is used as a teaching material by the teacher. It can be how to

make drinks, food, or the other things.
