STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

I seek to secure internship through NTHU Summer Research Programme 2018, so that I could
learn in-depth about research in material science which is not possible in my country due to lack
of funding or unavailability of world class infrastructure.

I’m interested in the field of photovoltaic devices and optoelectronic materials. Due to my interest
in this field, I have undertaken a stream project in which I synthesize and characterize novel
perovskite crystals and study their photovoltaic properties. I am inspired by the intriguing research
on photovoltaic devices being undertaken at NTHU. My strong academic background in this field
through my current project and my sound knowledge of the subject will be of additional benefit
for the internship.

Amazed by the advancements in nanotechnology and the impact it can have in the future of
material science, I’m also interested in the field of nanomaterials research, particularly their
synthesis, characterization and applications. Motivated by the research on functional
nanomaterials and nanodevices at NTHU, I would like to pursue this field. I have gained
experience in synthesis and characterization of materials through my previous internships and
projects which will be an aid while performing experiments.
I am also interested in studying about the Alloy Design, High Entropy Alloys, Microstructural and
mechanical behavior of materials. I’ve had courses and labs experience in physical and mechanical
metallurgy, and thus have a good grasp of the subject. This, alongside my desire to learn and
contribute in this field will help me carry out the research effectively

By securing this internship at NTHU, I will get the prestigious opportunity to be a full-fledged
group member under the renowned scientists. I will work with all my dedication to be able to
contribute towards science. NTHU provides an ideal platform where I can carry out the project by
utilizing world class facilities, instrumentation and labs. This exposure will be of immense
importance for kick starting my career as it would enable me to develop a whole new perspective
of research being undertaken in this field. I want to build a strong career in material science,
therefore such an international exposure becomes a vitality. Upon completion of the internship
program, I will aim to write a research paper with my supervisor and will present my internship
work in several conferences back in India and abroad.

I’ve been a Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) scholarship awardee in 2015 amongst
120,000 competing candidates. I’ve also been my school topper in Science Stream securing 10/10
CGPA in high school and 96.4% in 12th grade. I have qualified IIT-JEE 2015 amongst 1,400,000
candidates and secured admission in IIT BHU. IIT-JEE is considered to be the toughest
engineering entrance examination in India. My research aptitude got a boost when I got admitted
to IIT BHU in its Metallurgical Department for Dual Degree (B.Tech + M.Tech). The labs,
interesting courses and research environment made me want to pursue materials science as my
career. For this purpose, I did a two month internship at IIT Gandhinagar to gain research exposure
and strengthen my profile. I would like to mention that the manuscript preparation for my first
research paper is in progress. Following my passion for the subject, I’m currently pursuing the
stream project for getting Honors Degree in Metallurgy. I aim to do Ph.D in materials science
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
abroad after my graduation and for that purpose, require necessary research experience. Through
NTHU Summer Research Programme, I will get an excellent opportunity to explore in-depth about
the advances in material science and work on the project that I’ve been alloted.

I am an avid reader of scientific journals concerning developments in material science and

technology, keeping myself up-to-date. Having done three research projects, I’ve gained plenty of
lab exposure and temperament. I am equally comfortable with both/either of theoretical and
experimental work as an intern. My growing passion for material science research alongside with
my excellent academic record of CPI 9.05/10 (Department Rank 2) solidifies my application for
selection in the program. I am also confident that my work ethics and hard work would allow me
to make important and valuable contributions to material science.
