INVISIBLE CITIES

RESEARCH MATERIAL
FOR ESMERALDA
MEDIEVAL
ARCHITECTURE

Medieval architecture styles

include pre-Romanesque,
Romanesque and Gothic. I
decided that this style would fit
my chosen city best as the text
suggests a similar materiality.
The city of ‘Esmeralda’ is near
water, so this means that the
houses and bridges were built to
withstand events such as flooding.
EXTERIOR
ESTABLISHING
SHOT DETAILS

I explored old cities from a distance

and the best way to create a strong
composition.
I want to be able to show a small
glimpse into the city, whilst still
showing the vast landscape that it
covers.
I could do this by having a limited
number of houses in the foreground
and the rest of the city faded into the
background.
EXTERIOR LOW ANGLE SHOT DETAILS

I looked at tight streets based near water (like Venice) as well as market-places and hanging
lights.

As the city is full of canals and bridges, I want to incorporate reflection, I plan to show my
chosen city in and sunset of night-time setting
INTERIOR ESTABLISHING SHOT DETAILS

For my interior establishing shot I wanted to show the inside of a

Cathedral.

I particularly like the still from the film ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’
in which, the character who shares my chosen cities name, ‘Esmeralda’
stands in the light of a rose window.

I like this style of Gothic architecture and want to take certain elements
of it to create my digital painting
