Part B- LESSON

PLAN
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

Year Level: 5 Time:8.30am- 9.30am Date: 25 /10/19 Students’ Prior Knowledge:

Learning Area: Science / Design and Technology - Science knowledge helps people to
understand the effect of their actions
Strand/Topic from the Australian Curriculum (ACSHE051)

-Scientific knowledge is used to solve problems and

inform personal and community decisions
(ACSHE083)

General Capabilities (that may potentially be covered in the lesson)

Literacy Numeracy ICT Critical and Ethical Personal and Intercultural
competence creative behaviou Social understanding
thinking r competence
Cross-curriculum priorities (may be addressed in the lesson)
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Asia and Australia’s Sustainability
Islander histories and cultures engagement with Asia
Proficiencies:(Mathematics only)
Lesson Objectives (i.e. anticipated outcomes of this lesson, in point form beginning with an action verb)
As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:

- Recall information on reused clothing and plastic water bottle usage and waste.
- Write a list of materials and equipment needed for their design briefs
- Independently plan a design for their own bag holder

Teacher’s Prior Preparation/Organization: Provision for students at educational risk

- Prepare the classroom for the lesson - Student with Dysgraphia, to be seated front
- Whiteboard/ markers of class with own writing stand
- Audio is working for Youtube video - Modified instructions for class activity
- Subject books to be distributed
LESSON DELIVERY (attach worksheets, examples, marking key, etc, as relevant)
Resources/References
Motivation and Introduction:

- Introduce the lesson topic for this week and what the class
will be doing in the next 5 lessons in Science, this is one of
the five lessons that will be taking place
- Start the discussion of old clothing and plastic water bottles

Hands up if you have old clothes at home that you don’t

wear anymore or maybe don’t fit you in anymore, do you
ever think about what happens to those clothes, keep your
hands up if you want to share with the class what you do
with your old clothes?

- Class discussion with students sharing their response with

the person next to them, students to later share their answer
to the class
- Introduce the following videos, and how these will relate to
the activities completed later and looking forward to the
design task students will be required to complete
30minutes - Students are to be seated back at their desks, science books Subject (science
out and ruled up with the title, “Reuse, Reduce and Recycle” books) to be
distributed
- Watch the video, “where do your old clothes go”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMBZeJ74GuE

- Watch the video, “Environmental Impact of Plastic Water

Bottles”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YEGewENa6E

- Video viewing discussion, students to write down one fact

about the videos they didn’t know and one fact about the
video they found interesting. students to share their response
with the student next to them
White board//
Did you know 1 in 5 plastic water bottles are thrown away whiteboard marker
straight after use, we know how bad plastic is for our
environment, so what could we do about this?

- Teacher to write the class’s brainstorm ideas on the

whiteboard
- Brain storm as a class, why is it convenient for us to use
plastic water bottles? Eg easy to buy, always available,
- Brainstorm as a class, why they think plastic water bottles
are harmful for the environment and what we could instead
Eg Landfill, and use of reusable water bottles
Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key
Questions):

Now our brains are warmed up and all this discussion

regarding reusing pre- loved materials and avoiding the use
of plastic water bottles has us actively thinking about Planning worksheets
protecting the environment, lets dive straight into our to be distributed
activity today

- Today’s lesson focus will be on students starting their

planning for their design briefs
20 - Teacher to explain the design brief and will be expected of
minutes students when completing the task
- Students are encouraged to think about what the learnt about
the dangers of plastic water bottles to the environment and
how mass production of unused clothing is equally damaging
to the environment.

- To help prevent and hopefully contribute to solving these

issues, students will be making Water Bottle Bags.
- Teacher to go into detail of each step of this task and what
will be completed in each lesson across the next 5 weeks.
- With this mind, students will start to plan their bottle bags
using a planning worksheet that has an outline of bottle,
students can use this as a chance to draw, write and label
what they want their design to look like as well as what
clothing materials they will need to bring in and equipment
they might need
- Once student receives their worksheet, they may get started
and can use this time to also conference with the teacher any
questions or if they wish to check their designs with teacher.

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

- If students have not had enough to finish their plans, they

will be given the first half of the next lesson to finish them
off.
- Looking forward onto the next lesson, students will be
5 minutes learning about the importance of planning their designs and
if unfinished will continue with their drafting
- Students to be dismissed with their ticket out the door, by
answering the question, “name one item from home you are
able to recycle or able to reuse”
Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be
judged?)

- The design process is just as important as the final product,

students will submit their planning and drafts for marking to
go towards their final grade for this task
- Teacher will also be taking ongoing anecdotal notes as an
informal way of assessing the students
- Overall contribution to class discussions will be taken into
consideration for the students grade as well
