MODULE- 56A
Principle of conservation of mass, momentum, energy and corresponding
equations
________________________________________________________

The principle of conservation of mass: It states that mass can neither be created nor
destroyed. On the basis of this principle the continuity equation is derived.
The principle of conservation of momentum: It states that the impulse of the resultant force
or the product of the force and time increment during which it acts, is equal to the change in
momentum of the body. On the basis of this principle, the momentum equation is derived.
The principle of conservation of energy: It states that energy can neither be created nor
destroyed. On the basis of this principle the energy equation is derived.
Continuity equation:

( ) ( ) ( )

Impulse- momentum equations:

Net force= Rate of change of momentum

Energy equation: (Bernoulli’s equation)

Or

Pressure head + velocity head + datum head = constant

Each term represents the energy per unit weight of the flowing liquid.
