Urban Birding with David Lindo November 2-9, 2019 


Western Cuyahoga Audubon Society is pleased to announce a week of urban birding events and activities with ​David Lindo, ​The Urban Birder​,
in Cleveland, Ohio from November 2nd through 9th, 2019. David Lindo is Vice-President of the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust and voted 7th most
influential person in Wildlife by BBC Wildlife Magazine, Member of the British Guild of Travel Writers and a Fellow of the International League
of Conservation Writers, Proud Ambassador for Leica Birding, London Wildlife Trust, Rare Bird Alert, EcoNoja Feria Internacional and the
Colombia Bird Fair, President of The Friends of Suntrap Forest Education Centre, and author of several books including the recently published,
How to Be an Urban Birder. ​David Lindo’s visit to northeast Ohio celebrates the launch of ​Urban Birding Cleveland​, a WCAS initiative for all ages
of local birders. David will present on his urban birding experiences around the world in an effort to raise awareness and educate people on the
importance of preservation and conservation of bird and wildlife habitat. The week is filled with opportunities for the public to join David and
Cleveland’s expert bird walk leaders, birders, and dedicated citizen scientists on a series of urban bird walks and field trips that showcase
northeast Ohio’s iconic green spaces and birding locations. Please join us to give David a warm Cleveland welcome and to show support for bird
and wildlife habitat in our urban spaces! ​All activities, programs, and events are open to the public. Some events are ticketed but most are no

WCAS Bird Friendly Plant Sale a Fundraising Success. ​The
second WCAS Bird Friendly Plant Sale, Saturday and Sunday,
September 28-29 at the Tremont Arts Festival, sold locally
sourced native plants, shade-grown coffee, ​How To Be an Urban
Birder books, and provided free educational resource materials
to the booth’s many visitors. The tent was provided by Nancy
Howell, Bruce Missig organized logistics, Gloria Ferris assisted in
preparations and finances, Lisa Del Rio organized the coffee
display and sale, Kaoru and Ryohei Tsubone managed
volunteers, and plant experts Joe Reardon and Pat McGuigan
helped visitors with their questions about soil and plants.
Special thanks to Joe for contributing 12 Paw Paw (​Asimina
triloba​) ​trees, the favorite Festival plant! The Bird Friendly Plant
team is already planning next spring sales. Interested in

Western Cuyahoga Audubon programs are free and open to the public. Monthly programs are held the first Tuesday of each month, September
through May, at the Rocky River Nature Center, 24000 Valley Pkwy, North Olmsted, OH 44070. Guests are invited to learn about the Audubon

“Purple Martins of Summit County”


Presenter:​ Kay Lukac, Portage Lakes Purple Martin Association
Date & Time:​ Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at 7:30 p.m.
Description:​ Purple Martins are the largest swallow in Ohio. Nesting
in colonies, usually martin boxes or gourds supplied by people, the
birds are a sound of the summer. As the martins ready themselves for
migration to Brazil, they will gather by the thousands around lakes
and wetland habitats. Portage Lakes in Summit County is one of the
areas in which the birds congregate and the Portage Lakes Purple
Martin Association is proud to share information about the life history
of the martins as well as the importance of the habitats the birds
need prior to migration as well as in South America.
