PURPOSE:

1. To evaluate the role of Chest X-ray with Ultrasonography in pneumonia in an ICU setting.

2. To analyze the advantages and disadvantages of Chest X-ray & Ultrasonography in pneumonia in an
ICU setting.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

The present study is carried out at KEM Hospital, Pune in the Intensive Care Unit from 1 st June 2018 to
31st May 2019 on patients with clinical findings of pneumonia. The patient data and clinical history was
recorded. USG was done using Portable Ultrasound machine in ICU with linear and curvilinear probes of
8-12 Mhz and 3-5 Mhz. Chest radiographs taken using portable x-ray machines were simultaneously
evaluated.
Various lung findings on chest radiograph like inhomogeneous opacities, homogeneous opacities, air
bronchogram, A-lines, B-lines were assessed. Ultrasonographic findings like the quad sign, fractal sign,
lung rockets, b –lines were also evaluated.

RESULT:
Ultrasound was found to be effective in picking up findings like homogeneous opacities, air
bronchogram, B-lines, A –lines, pleural effusion. It was not able to pick up inhomogeneous opacities
especially in deeper parts of lung.

CONCLUSION: Ultrasound can be used as an effective tool for evaluation of pneumonia in adults in
ICU settings.
