CRYSTALLIZATION

Example Problems

Problem 1
• A Swenson Surface Crystallizer is to be used to
produce 1 MT/hr crystals by cooling a saturated
solution of Ferrous sulfate that enters the
crystallizer at 50oC. The slurry leaves at 30oC.
Cooling Water enters at 15oC and leaves at
20oC.
a)What crystals are formed?
b)Calculate the cooling water requirement, kg/hr if
the overall HTC for the exchanger is 200 W/m 2K.
Specific heat of the feed is 3 kJ/kgK
c) How many crystallizer units are needed? Area is
1 square m per meter length
