Hazing in PMA

By Bea Ganotisi
X - St. Philip

At 5:15 AM, September 18, 2019, Darwin Dormitorio was declared dead due to cardiac
arrest secondary to internal hemorrhage. (Acosta, 2019) His death shocked and worried the
masses. Dormitorio was a cadet in training at The Philippine Military Academy, where he was
abused by his colleagues. There should be more strict rules regarding incidents like this, as what
lead to this incident is lack of supervision, and also lack of discipline.

It was said that he was being abused because of an ‘initiation’ as stated by his fellow
cadets. (Dumlao & Cabrera, 2019) He was tasered on his private areas, because of losing his
training boots. (Laude, 2019) Does this cadet deserve to suffer this much? Why weren’t there any
interventions? I think it was all because of ignorance. The absence of overseers resulted into this
situation.

There are now being some actions being taken to stop hazing, with Kabataan Party-list
Rep. Sarah Elago saying “We join his parents in looking forward to an investigation into Darwin’s
death. Cadets and students everywhere don’t expect deaths to happen inside schools, especially
in the country’s most prestigious military academy,” (Sadongdong, 2019)

All in all, Darwin Dormitorio’s death was a tragic one. Filled with the abuse and ignorance
of other people. The tales of abuse are really saddening and unfair, but there have been actions
made to prevent this. I suppose if given enough time, hazing will eventually fade
