CREATOR
JUAN DE PLASENCIA
Juan de Plasencia or Juan Portocarrero (his birth name) was born to a well-respected and admired
family in Plasencia in the region of Extremadura, Spain in the early 16th century. He was actually one
of the first batch of the Franciscan missionaries who came in the Philippines. He was one of the seven
children of a captain of a Spanish sailing vessel called schooner. He spent most of his missionary life in
the Philippines, where he founded numerous towns in Luzon and authored several religious and linguistic
books, most notably, the Doctrina Cristiana (Christian Doctrine), the first book ever printed in the
Philippines. He is not well known when or where he first entered the Order of the Franciscans. He is
believed to have arrived to the Philippines in 1578, after a stopover in Mexico. As soon as he arrived, he
joined forces with another missionary, Fray Diego de Oropesa, and they both started preaching around
Laguna de Bay and Tayabas, Quezon, in Quezon Province, where he founded several towns. During the
following years they are also credited with the foundation of a large number of towns in the provinces of
Bulacan, Laguna and Rizal, such as Tayabas, Caliraya, Lucban, Mahjayjay, Nagcarlan, Lilio(Liliw), Pila,
Santa Cruz, Lumban, Pangil, Siniloan, Morong, Antipolo, Taytay, and Meycauayan. As a friar, Juan de
Plasencia lived up to his pledge, leading a lifestyle devoid of any luxury and in constant contact with the
people he was trying to convert to Christianity. He was also very keen on creating primary schools, and
requested official sanction for the creation of educational centers where "Filipinos could not only learn
Christian doctrine, but also reading and writing, and some arts and crafts, so they would become after,
not only good Christians but also useful citizens", an initiative that was approved by Domingo de Salazar,
the first Bishop of the See of Manila (1512–1594). Juan de Plasencia wrote a number of books designed
primarily to promote the understanding of both the Spanish language among the natives, and the local
languages among the missionaries, to facilitate the task of spreading Christianity. He is the author of
what is believed to be the first book printed in the Philippines, the Doctrina Cristiana, that was not only
printed in Spanish, but also in Tagalog, in both Latin script and the commonly used Baybayin script of
the natives of the time, and it even had a version in Chinese. He died in Liliw, Laguna in 1590.

CONTEXT
It was written on the year 1598 during the Spanish Colonial Period. After receiving the Lordship letter,
Plasencia wish to reply immediately but he postponed his answer in order that he might first thoroughly
inform himself in regard to people s request, and to avoid discussing the conflicting reports of the
Indians. Therefore, he collected Indians from different districts old men, and those of most capacity
and from them he have obtained the simple truth, after weeding out much foolishness, in regard to their
government, administration of justice, inheritance, slaves and dowries. Customs of the Tagalog is a
part of longer monographs written by chroniclers of the Spanish expeditions to the Philippines during
the early 16th and 17th centuries. They appeared initially in Blair and Robertson 55 volumes, The
Philippine Islands and in the Philippine Journal of Sciences.

Spanish religious, who was born in Baños de Rio Tobia, La Rioja, to 1525. The first Bishop of the
Philippines, Domingo de Salazar, was a Spanish Dominican friar. While his contemporary, Bartolomé
de las Casas, is more widely known for his defense of the Aboriginal peoples in Central America,
Salazar is a lesser-known figure. He was soon sent to the missions of Mexico and Florida in America,
and there served as Professor in various colleges. It reached the maximum rating possible for a
Dominican friar, master in Holy theology. Bishop Salazar was a student of the “School of Salamanca,”
which was a group of university-based theologians renowned for their work on moral philosophy and
legal thought. He was a student of de las Casas’ writings and attended lectures of theologian
Francesco de Vitoria, who wrote on the legitimacy of Spain’s claim over native-held territories in the
Americas. This School was well known for their staunch defense of native rights at the time and it is
no surprise that Salazar was a product of this group of thinkers.
