NATURE OF MAGNETISM

MAGNETISM-property of a material that

enables to ATTRACT or REPEL to other
materials.

It is a force of attraction and repulsion due to an

arrangement of electrons.
Electrons in certain materials move in such a way
that it makes a MAGNETIC FIELD.

MAGNETIC
. FIELD-is the area in which
magnetic forces can act.
The atoms will then have a NORTH and
SOUTH pole.
These two poles are the place where the
magnetic forces are at their strongest.
MAGNETIC MATERIALS
Lodestones- are NATURAL MAGNETS
known since ancient times.
They are made up of magnetite and an iron ore.
The magnetic materials are always metal ,but
only a few metals are magnetic.

Materials which can be magnetized are

called Ferromagnetic Materials.
They contain iron, nickel and cobalt.
They are made up of a set of regions
called DOMAINS. Each domain acts
like a tiny magnet with its own NORTH
and SOUTH poles. When they are not
magnetized, domains are not aligned.
But when they do, domains are aligned.
MAGNETIC INDUCTION

It is the process of making magnets.

Soft magnetic materials (such as iron) are easily

magnetized and also tend to lose their magnetism easily.
Hard magnetic materials (such as nickel,
cobalt) are difficult to magnetize, and they tend to retain
their magnetism.
Non-Magnetic materials, such as wood, paper,
plastic, and most metals, don't get attracted towards
magnets.

Rules of Magnet:
•Opposite poles ATTRACT
•Same poles REPEL

SYPNOSIS
Magnetism is a property of material that
enables to attract or repel other
materials. Magnets has two poles the north
and south poles, when unlike poles attract
and like poles. Magnets are made up of iron
and nickel. The process of making magnets
is called Magnetic Indunction. Around a
magnet there is a magnetic field, a
magnetic field is a vector field that
describes the magnetic influence of
electric charges in relative motion and
magnetized materials.
