Definition of Procedure Text

Texts that explain how something works or how to use instruction / operation manuals e.g. how to
use the video, the computer, the tape recorder, the photocopier, the fax. (2) Texts that instruct how to
do a particular activity e.g. recipes, rules for games, science experiments, road safety rules. (3) Texts
that deal with human behavior, e.g how to live happily, how to succeed

Procedure text adalah suatu jenis teks yang menggambarkan bagaimana sesuatu dapat dibuat atau
digunakan melalui serangkaian langkah – langkah.

Generic Structure of Procedure Text

 Goals/ aim: berisi tujuan kegiatan atau hal yang akan dilakukan atau dibuat nantinya.
 Materials/ tools: berisi bahan-bahan dan terkadang alat-alat yang dibutuhkan untuk
membuat suatu barang/ melakukan suatu hal. Dalam procedure text, materials bersifat
opsional atau tidak selalu ada.
 Steps: serangkaian langkah-langkah atau tips yang harus dilakukan.

Purpose of Procedure Text

– To explain/tell (the reader) how to make/operate/do something through a sequence of actions or

steps.
– To explain steps/instruction to make/operate/do something

Procedure text sendiri bertujuan untuk memberi petunjuk tentang langkah-langkah/ metode/ cara-cara
dalam membuat, mengoperasikan, atau melakukan sesuatu.

Example :

How to Make Meatballs

Ingredients:

 1 kilo of very fine minced meat.

 2 eggs.
 300 grams of tapioca-flour.
 4-8 cloves of garlic.
 1 red onion.
 1 teaspoon of white pepper.
 2 teaspoons of salt.

The steps:

1. First of all, mix garlic, red onion, salt, and white pepper in a mortar or mixer.
2. Second, mix the spice-mixture with the eggs, the tapioca-flour and the minced meat.
3. After that, use your fingers, add a cup of water, and keep on working until the mixture feels
soft and smooth.
4. Then, boil some water in a rather large pot, at least about 2 liters.
5. Next step, start rolling the mixture into small meatballs.
6. Finally, lower the meatballs into the boiling water. When they float up to the surface, the
meatballs are ready to serve.

Definition of Descriptive Text
Descriptive Text is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to describe
and reveal a particular person, place, or thing.

Descriptive Text adalah salah satu jenis text dalam Bahasa Inggris yang
menggambarkan dengan jelas sifat-sifat yang melekat pada sesuatu, baik itu manusia,
hewan, tumbuhan mau pun benda mati.

Generic Structure of Descriptive Text

1. Identification
Bagian ini, terletak pada paragraf pertama, tujuannya adalah untuk mengidentifikasi
suatu objek yang ingin dideskripsikan. Indentification berfungsi untuk memperkenalkan
kepada pembaca tentang objek yang akan kita jelaskan, sebelum kita memberitahu
tentang lebih rinci mengenai objek tersebut pada paragraf selanjutnya.

2. Description
Bagian ini, terletak pada paragraf kedua dan seterusnya, berisi tentang sifat-sifat yang
melekat pada sesuatu yang sudah kamu kenalkan pada pembaca pada paragraf
pertama.

Purpose of Descriptive text

– To describe person, thing or place in specific
– To describe a particular person, thing or place.

Tujuan dari teks ini adalah memberikan informasi dengan jelas mengenai objek yang
digambarkan kepada pembaca

Contoh soal:
Peter is the youngest in our family. He is fourteen years old and four years younger than me.
He has long, straight hair, bright eyes and a friendly smile. Sometimes he is rather naughty at
home, but he usually does what he is asked to do.
Peter is interested in sports very much, and at school, he plays football and tennis. He is the
best badminton player in our family.
