Uses || Types of Cement
In today article we will discuss that what is masonry cement , its properties and their
uses. so let’s get start..

What is Masonry Cement

Generally ordinary cement mortar came into usage as it is good at strength and setting
properties than lime water

However cement mortar is inferior to lime mortar in workability, water retentivity ,

shrinkage property and extensibility.

Yhus masonry cement is discovered which is particularly incorporates the good

properties of lime mortar and discards all the ideal properties of cement mortar.

Masonry cement also contains a certain amount of air entraining agent and mineral
admixtures which improves plasticity and water retentivity.

Masonry cement is manufactured by integrating and mixing of the Portland cement

clinker with Pozzolanic material or non Pozzolanic materials, waste materials, gypsum
under in training plasticizer and suitable proportions.

The Pozzolanic materials includes calcined clay, fly ash etc

The non Pozzolanic materials include limestone ,conglomerates dolomite etc

The waste materials include carbonated, sludge mine ,tailings etc

Properties of typical masonry cement

1. The finest residue should be maximum of 15% when tested in 45 micron is sieve
2. The cement should not have expansion more than 10 millimeters for Lea cheatelier
tests and 1% for autoclave tests
3. The initial setting time of the cement is 90 minutes
4. The final setting time of this cement is 24 hours
5. The compressive strength of this cement after seven days is 2.5 Newton per millimeter
square and after 28 days is 5 Newton per millimeter square
6. The air content of mortar should be 6 percent when composed of 1 part of masonry
cement and 3 parts of standard sand by volume
7. In the same water test water retention capacity should be 60 percent of original flow
